A rail siding upgrade at Julia Creek is set to provide stowage and passing options for mineral and freight trains as well as cutting cattle loading times.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is investing more than $3 million to extend the rail siding, taking its length from about 630m to more than 2km.

“The Mount Isa line is a vital connection for Queensland’s resources sector, and we want to support moving freight and commodities by rail as a priority,” TMR director-general Sally Stannard said .

“Providing full-length train access into the siding at Julia Creek will improve cattle train loading, reduce impacts on main line services and increase capacity for other passing trains.

“This upgrade builds on Queensland Government investment in the Mount Isa line including the $4.26 million siding upgrade being delivered at Maxwelton and the completed $49 million replacement of steel sleepers with new concrete sleepers.”

McKinlay Shire Mayor Philip Curr described the development as exciting news for council, as it would facilitate greater opportunities for the community and industry.

“Extending the siding at Julia Creek will create potential for road transfer to rail for intermodal services on nearby council land, and support ongoing development in the region,” he said.
