Isaac Downs work in running for civil honours

Civil Mining and Construction's work to bring the Isaac Downs coal mine near Moranbah into production is among the projects vying for Civil Contractors Federation - Queensland Earth Awards this year. The CCF Earth Awards recognise outstanding work in construction and environmental excellence which reflects development and use of the best technologies and practices by Australian civil contractors. They are presented in six categories related to project value. CMC is in the running for work at Isaac Downs after Stanmore Resources engaged it under an ‘atypical’ Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract in 2020 to produce engineering designs and pricing for road, levee and dam works that would transform an environmentally sensitive site into a 4Mtpa mine. Adopting a ‘capital lite’ approach, CMC devised a cheaper and safer haul road alignment and ‘offline’ bridge underpass construction solution that resulted in Stanmore entrusting CMC with full design and construction. This included accelerating delivery of a 1Mtpa bulk sample pit – which was hauling coal in a record 17 weeks, and planning and constructing an 8km ‘walk’ and highway crossing to shift Stanmore’s 3400t dragline (pictured below) to the new mine, which achieved full-scale coal production in the first quarter of 2022. In North Queensland, Townsville Earthmoving's work on The Orchard Stage 4 & 5 development is also in the running for an award. With the total site area spanning over 8.5ha of sloping terrain, the subdivision presented environmental challenges for the contractors to overcome. CivilPlus is also a finalist for Crystal Creek remediation works carried out for Townsville City Council. The company was engaged to install 310 6m timber piles as part of the council's best practice riparian vegetation restoration program, which integrated an engineering design that utilises the naturally occurring creek hydrology. Other Earth Awards finalists this year include: Abergeldie - Minnippi Parklands Shared Path Script (Brisbane), Alder Constructions – Marine Stadium Jetty and Pontoon (Gold Coast), Doval Constructions – Logan Motorway Deck Replacement, SGQ - Hervey Bay RSL Mini Golf: Stage 1 (Early Works), Brady Marine & Civil - Marine Structures - IOR Petroleum Terminal Expansion, Fulton Hogan – Gympie Arterial Road and Strathpine Road Interchange Upgrade Project, Doval Constructions – Grand Plaza Culvert Rehabilitation, Logan City, ERTECH - M1 Exit 45 Ormeau Interchange Upgrade, SEE Civil - Tamborine Mountain Road Reconstruction Works, BMD Constructions - Mount Crosby East Bank Water Treatment Plant Filter Upgrade, Georgiou Group – Isle of Capri Bridge Project, Georgiou Group – Saltwater Creek Bridge Upgrade, and Seymour Whyte - Pacific Motorway Upgrade Varsity Lakes to Burleigh (VL2B).
