Gladstone takes new energy credentials to the world

The Gladstone Engineering Alliance has joined a delegation to the United States to investigate future opportunities within the hydrogen, bio-fuels and renewable energy sector for Central Queensland. The delegation includes Trade and Investment Queensland, the Queensland Department of Innovation, State Development, CQ University and the Gladstone Regional Council. GEA chief executive officer Julie Gelder said the trade mission was not only designed to investigate up-and-coming opportunities for the Central Queensland region within hydrogen, bio-fuels and the renewables sector, but to also attract investment and to get a better understanding of the emerging industry itself. “Gladstone’s been identified as the preferred region in the development of clean, innovative and competitive renewable energy with the Queensland premier only last week announcing the region will play an integral part in the Queensland Government’s $19 million Hydrogen Industry Strategy,” Ms Gelder said. GEA president Anthony Buenen, Gladstone mayor Matt Burnett, CQ University associate professor Owen Nevin are promoting Gladstone as a place to invest with the support of Queensland Minister for Innovation Kate Jones at the 2019 BIO International Convention in Philadelphia. “As the peak industry body for Central Queensland with over 200 member businesses/suppliers working within the resource sector, the GEA are working closely with industry and government in a combined multi-stakeholder approach to facilitate the promotion of Central Queensland as a suitable location for investment of technology-based projects to support the production, transportation and utilisation of renewable energy including hydrogen,” Ms Gelder said. Ms Gelder added the delegation will also be attending the 2019 BIO World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology in Iowa in July. Queensland’s hydrogen potential was also on show in Tokyo this week at an event hosted by peak resources investment body the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC). State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Minister Cameron Dick said Queensland was committed to becoming a hydrogen exporter of choice for the world, particularly renewable hydrogen. “Queensland is entering a new era of innovation-led partnerships with Japan to grow and develop a successful hydrogen industry,” Mr Dick says. “Our plan is to maximise our renewable resources and further diversify our economy to create more jobs for Queenslanders." “Australia and Japan have a long and enduring trade relationship, and through our hydrogen industry we’re looking to build on this further.
