Federal strategy to supercharge battery sector

The Federal Government has released a National Battery Strategy, intended to map a path for Australia to take advantage of growing global demand. The drive is backed by Budget funding including $523.2 million for the Battery Breakthrough Initiative to promote the development of battery manufacturing capabilities and $20.3 million for Building Future Battery Capabilities to incentivise research,. The strategy released today identifies four high-value strategic opportunities: Stationary storage - building energy storage systems to firm renewable power generation in the national grid and for communities, businesses and homes. Provide battery active materials to the world by upgrading raw minerals into processed battery components to strengthen battery supply chains. Leveraging world-leading know-how to build safer and more secure batteries connected to the grid. Building batteries for the transport manufacturing industry, including heavy vehicle manufacturing. “We want to make more things here and with global demand for batteries set to quadruple by 2030, Australia must be a player in this field," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said. “Batteries are a critical ingredient in Australia’s clean energy mix. Together with renewable energy, green hydrogen, and critical minerals, we will meet Australia’s emission reduction targets and create a strong clean energy manufacturing industry.” Related: On the front foot for Future Made in Australia As the inaugural strategy released under the government’s Future Made in Australia Act, the initiative has the potential to turbocharge Australia’s renewable transition, according to the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE). “The National Battery Strategy is a step towards positioning Australia as a global leader in battery production by 2035,” ATSE chief executive officer Kylie Walker said. “The strategy is an opportunity to shift our focus from simply exporting minerals to adding value through advanced manufacturing capabilities.” She said while the strategy recognised the importance of research, existing funding must be increased to ensure global competitiveness. “Australia’s research strength in battery technologies, such as ATSE Fellow Professor Maria Skyllas-Kazacos FTSE’s work on vanadium batteries, is an incredible asset that we must take advantage of,” Ms Walker said. “The forthcoming independent review of research funding will be essential to take advantage of Australia’s competitive advantage in battery manufacturing and set initiatives such as this one up for success.” You may also like: https://industryqld.com.au/axon-to-advance-nq-battery-anode-material-plant
