Facebook group rallies for mining families hit by tragedy

A deeply personal loss has helped propel the owner of a mining community media platform to launch fundraising efforts for the families left behind by recent workplace accidents on the Bowen Basin coalfields. The WordInThePit Mining Facebook group site has a campaign underway to raise funds after the death of Frank Thomas at Oaky Creek early this month, hot on the heels of a similar effort for John Linwood's family. "Recently, I experienced the loss of my father, and when the tragic passing of the late John Linwood occurred at Macmahon's Byerwen coal mine, it deeply affected me," WordInThePit Mining site owner 'Missy Moo' said. "My heart broke for the Linwood family, and I felt compelled to help ease their financial burden. With the help of a caring community, we were able to raise $11,317.11 for the Linwood family. "Following this, when the unfortunate fatality of Frank Thomas happened, I was inspired by the success of our first effort and felt a renewed determination to support affected families." That appeal has raised more than $1700 so far, and the Facebook figure - who prefers to remain anonymous - aims to reach $10,000, with hopes the mining company will match this dollar for dollar. "I partnered with Miners' Promise to ensure that mining community members and their families would have peace of mind during such devastating times. This cause is genuinely close to my heart," she said. Related: Restrictions remain at mining fatality site "Miners' Promise has been around since 2010 and, over the years, it has slowly gained recognition for the tireless support it provides to mining families. "With expert psychologists specialising in trauma, Miners' Promise offers crucial emotional and mental health support." Miners' Promise general manager Sarah Garvey said the group took care of families when tragedies occured on mining or resources sites in Australia "Our support also extends to the organisation where we provide expert advice on industry best-practice in supporting the needs of those most closely affected by workplace tragedies," she said. The charity manages and hosts memorial funds on behalf of families when requested. Ms Garvey said there was no cost to this service, and all monies were transferred to families in full including any interest accumulated. Donations are tax deductible.
