Diatreme inks agreement to deliver community benefits

Diatreme Resources has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council aimed at maximising local economic benefits from its Northern Silica Project. The planned initiatives include training and development programs aimed at enhancing the skill sets of the local workforce. Diatreme said a cultural heritage management plan would be developed in consultation with the relevant Aboriginal parties to ensure the protection of significant sites and traditions. And it said the company was committed to providing regular updates to the council and the community on the NSP’s development as part of its governance approach. "Diatreme is delighted to sign this agreement with Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council, highlighting our commitment to an open and trusting relationship with the local community,” chief executive officer Neil McIntyre said. "Diatreme is focused on generating impactful Indigenous business and employment programs, working closely with the community to tailor such opportunities to local needs. "Ongoing engagement with Hope Vale community is vital and we look forward to making an important contribution to the community’s sustainable development, while ensuring traditions are respected and protected and environmental impacts minimised.” The scoping study for Diatreme's planned silica sand mine near Cape Flattery showed the potential for a 25-year operation with a production rate moving progressively from 3 to 5 million tonnes per annum to meet the growing demands of the solar PV and specialty glass market Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council chief executive officer Steve Linnane said the council considered that the Memorandum of Cooperation was an important step in ensuring economic benefits were delivered to the broad Hope Vale community, while balancing environmental stewardship with sustainable development. "Council looks forward to ongoing communication with Diatreme to make this agreement a success, ensuring a sustainable future for the region,” he said. Diatreme said it was continuing to advance the silca operation's regulatory pathway, including lodging an application with the Queensland Office of the Coordinator General (OCG) for the NSP to be designated as a coordinated project. EIS studies are also advancing for finalisation of the draft Initial Advice Statement (IAS) and Terms of Reference (ToR).
