CS Energy has kicked off a $40 million overhaul of Unit B2 at Callide Power Station, with work set to run until October 27.

The company said the 56-day overhaul had been many months in the planning and was designed to set the unit up for safe and reliable power generation, particularly over the upcoming summer.

“CS Energy is delivering these works with its asset management alliance partner Downer, together with subcontractors including Intertek and Multivalve Flow Solutions,” a company spokeswoman said.

The scope of work includes a generator rotor inspection, low-pressure turbine rotor inspection, generator circuit breaker replacement, auxiliary transformer change out, statutory inspections, economiser rotation and various other works.

At its peak, the overhaul will involve up to 330 people working on a range of plant inspections, maintenance and upgrades.

This includes Callide employees and approximately 250 overhaul contractors.

“Overhauls bring a real economic boost to the local region from the extra workers on-site and flow-on benefits to the local service industries such as accommodation providers, caterers and transport companies,” the spokeswoman said.

Following the completion of the B2 overhaul, CS Energy will carry out a short summer readiness outage on its sister unit B1 in November.

The Callide power station, near Biloela in Central Queensland, is comprised of two power plants; Callide B and C, each with two generating units (B1 and B2, C3 and C4).

A project is underway to rebuild the two Unit C3 cooling towers, while Unit C4 was damaged in May 2021, when a fire at the site sparked a massive power outage throughout Queensland.
