CQ project makes Hydrogen Headstart shortlist

Stanwell's Central Queensland Hydrogen (CQ-H2) Project has made the shortlist for support under the Federal Government's $2 billion Hydrogen Headstart program. It is one of six applicants that have been invited to submit a full application in the next stage of the program. The Stanwell-led project, to be built outside Gladstone, involves the development of a hydrogen production facility, a hydrogen gas pipeline and hydrogen liquefaction facility, as well as supply of hydrogen to an ammonia production facility. It has has commenced the Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) study phase, with a commitment of $117 million from government and consortium partners. The Australian Hydrogen Council (AHC) congratulated the government on reaching the next milestone of the program. “The six shortlisted projects represent a total electrolyser capacity of 3.5GW across various end uses predominantly in hard-to-abate sectors such as ammonia," Australian Hydrogen Council chief executive officer Fiona Simon said. “AHC recognises the importance of these sectors in building scale and capability of the hydrogen industry, and we are pleased to see these projects prioritised in the Hydrogen Headstart shortlist. “We have a strong pipeline of hydrogen projects in Australia, and even those that are not successful in this round of the Hydrogen Headstart will be in a better position to compete in future rounds. “2024 is shaping up to be a defining year for the hydrogen industry in Australia, and also for the Australian Government in bringing together key policies that send the right signals to investors to realise its renewable energy superpower ambitions." Under the Hydrogen Headstart Program, projects seeking to produce renewable hydrogen or derivatives, such as renewable ammonia or methanol, at scale can apply for a production credit delivered over 10 years to bridge the commercial gap between the cost of producing renewable hydrogen and the market price. Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said renewable hydrogen was crucial to reach net zero, while creating economic opportunities for regional Australia. “We have the largest pipeline of renewable hydrogen projects in the world – Hydrogen Headstart is about supporting these projects to become a reality, as Australia transforms into a renewable energy superpower,” he said. Shortlisted applicants have until June 27, 2024 to submit their full application. The government intends to announce funding recipients in late 2024.
