Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews were continuing the clean-up today after a truck carrying ammonium nitrate crashed on the Bruce Highway at Bloomsbury, just south of Proserpine, on Tuesday.

The accident prompted police to establish an exclusion zone with a 5km radius and evacuate some nearby properties.

Queensland Rail closed the North Coast line – Mackay to Townsville between Bloomsbury and Thoopara. A Queensland Rail spokeswoman said at lunchtime today the closure had impacted eight freight operations and delayed a Spirit of Queensland passenger service. (Update: the line re-opened at 3.30pm February 14).

A QFES spokeswoman said crews were called to the scene about 11.30am yesterday when a B-double trailer loaded with ammonium nitrate crashed, resulting in a spill.

This was contained by about 2.30pm. QFES crews this morning finalised decanting the dangerous substance and were clearing the roadway.
