Yeppoon lagoon construction kicks off

Construction work has officially kicked off on the Lagoon Precinct in Yeppoon as part of Livingstone Shire's $53 million Town Centre and Foreshore Revitalisation Project. Mayor Bill Ludwig said detailed design plans for the 2500sq m lagoon had involved extensive community consultation. “The Lagoon Precinct is the spectacular centrepiece of the Yeppoon Town Centre and Foreshore Revitalisation Project and will encapsulate some of the unique attributes of the Capricorn Coast, including a swim-up infinity edge with stunning views over the Keppel Islands,” Cr Ludwig said. “It has been designed to include both a shallow children’s play area as well as an informal lap swimming area and shaded areas in and around the lagoon, while the two storey pavilion will offer stunning interactive dining areas overlooking the entire precinct and coastline. “Through projects like the Yeppoon Foreshore and Town Centre Revitalisation our vision continues to unfold into an exciting reality.” Deputy Premier and Infrastructure and Planning Minister Jackie Trad joined Cr Ludwig, State Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga and Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry today for a 'sod turning' to mark the start of construction works on site. The Yeppoon Foreshore and Town Centre Revitalisation (Stages 3, 4 & 5) is a $53 million project jointly funded with the Australian Government contributing $10 million, the Queensland Government contributing $29 million, and Livingstone Shire Council contributing $14 million. The Lagoon Precinct will include the construction of the Appleton and Barry St Intersection, Keppel Kraken beach access, the Normanby-Queen streetscape, a footbridge to Cooee Bay and an amphitheatre stage roof. Woollam Constructions won the tender for construction of the Lagoon Precinct, Griffin Builders the beach amphitheatre stage roof, JRT Civil the lagoon access road, and the Appleton and Barry St roundabout construction will be carried out by the Livingstone Shire Council works crew. Work also started this week on the next stage of the $4.5 million strategic master plan for Livingstone Shire's Emu Park Village and Foreshore Revitalisation Project. Cr Ludwig said the project would provide significant economic and social benefits to the community, while helping to further enhance the interactive tourist attractions on the southern end of the Capricorn Coast. “The Emu Park Village and Foreshore Revitalisation Project is a spectacular example of what can be achieved when council and State Government work together in close partnerships with the community,” he said.
