A worker remains in a stable condition in Townsville University Hospital after suffering serious injuries in an incident at the Mount Isa Mines copper concentrator on Tuesday, according to a company update.

The Queensland Ambulance Service was called to the Railway Avenue site at 9.24am on January 14 for reports of a man receiving life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a piece of equipment.

Paramedics transported the patient to Mount Isa Hospital, the QAS said, and he was transferred to Townsville for further medical treatment.

MIM said it had immediately activated incident and emergency response procedures when the incident occurred.

“Our priority is the health and safety of our workforce, and we will continue to support all those affected,” a spokesman said.

“We notified the regulatory authorities and an investigation is underway.”

RSHQ’s Serious Incident Investigation Unit is investigating the incident.

Smoke prompts partial evacuation

Meanwhile the company said that smoke had been reported at the George Fisher underground mine today, prompting a partial evacuation of the mine.

An MIM spokeswoman said this afternoon that equipment failure at an electrical substation had been confirmed as the source of the smoke.

“So our electricians isolated that equipment and operations recommenced,” she said.
