Vitrinite triumphs in national mining awards

Queensland's Vitrinite has taken out a national award with Barada Barna Aboriginal Corporation for their work to ensure the company's mining operations bring enduring benefits to the local community. Vitrinite, which started mining at the Vulcan coking coal project in the Bowen Basin this year, was recognised with the AMEC Community Contribution award. In announcing the win, the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) said Vitrinite and Barada Barna Aboriginal Corporation worked together with a particular emphasis on helping the community become more involved in the industry that has such a large impact on their traditional home. "The partnership between Vitrinite and Barada Barna reflects a commitment to developing a strong and equitable partnership from the very start," AMEC chief executive officer Warren Pearce said. "They use a unique approach from the get-go which means that both organisations are building capacity in a number of areas to develop their communities and projects.” AMEC awards showcase commitment to exploration, the environment and community within the Australian mineral exploration and mining sector. The winners were announced in front of nearly 400 guests at the annual AMEC Awards Dinner in Perth on Thursday. “Once again the standard from all nominees was exceptional, making judging in each category a difficult task,” Mr Pearce said. The 2021 Prospector award was presented Andy Beckwith, Allan Kneeshaw and Phil Tornatora from De Grey Mining, for the Hemi Discovery. “The last several years have seen record exploration expenditure across Australia, and exploration success and new discoveries have followed," Mr Pearce said. "It is certainly exciting to see the resurgence in greenfields exploration continue into another year with an exceptional discovery winning this year’s award. “The impressiveness of this discovery is driven by its size, grade continuity and growth potential, with a maiden mineral estimate of 6.8Moz and the potential to be mined by large scale, low strip ratio, low-cost open pit mining. Hemi is on track to prove a Tier 1 resource and one of Australia’s most exciting gold projects.” The AMEC Environment Award was presented to Fortescue Metals Group who, after nearly 100 years of no conclusive proof the Night Parrot was still alive, persevered for years with a comprehensive monitoring program at Fortescue Marsh, and in 2018 were able to confirm the bird’s existence. The AMEC Media Award went to Rachel Pupazzoni from ABC News for her video story “Australia's lithium miners to benefit from surge in electric vehicle demand in China.”
