The Resources Centre of Excellence (RCOE) has appealed to the Liberal National Party opposition to commit to the expansion of their Mackay facilities.

Among others, Mackay based RCOE provides facilities for resource development with an underground mine simulated training and testing facility, emerging technology capabilities, as well as training and conference facilities.

Electricity distributors Energex and Ergon Energy have opened applications for their 2022 apprentice intake, with 116 roles on offer.

They include openings for electrotechnologists, electricians, distribution linespersons, mechanical fitters and communication techs.

Energy Minister Mick de Brenni said the Class of 2022 would start their training in February, joining 460 apprentices already learning the ropes with Ergon and Energex.

Applications close this Sunday for the 2021-2022 Vacation Program intake, which runs from November to February at Mount Isa Mines, Ernest Henry Mining and Copper Refineries.

Cutting-edge training builds tradies’ tech know-how

Townsville boilermaker Donnelly Madden is among more than 40 trades professionals polishing their skills for the technological advances of the fourth industrial revolution through a pilot training scheme.

The group is studying for a Diploma of Applied Technologies - the first of its kind in Queensland.

The Queensland Government has invested $300,000 in the Higher Level Apprenticeship Pilot and has partnered with TAFE Queensland, Skills Lab and Ai Group to encourage industry to embrace new digital technologies.

BHP backs Future of Work training initiative

BHP is partnering with the Commonwealth Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) to create training opportunities for up to 1000 Australians in regional areas.

Construction skills group steps up training scheme

Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) has announced a $42 million workforce training package to prepare for the state's COVID-19 recovery.

CSQ’s training package for workers and businesses in the construction industry has increased by 14 per cent from last year.

It will extend existing training programs while adding some specific responses to challenges resulting from COVID-19, the organisation says.

Plea to overhaul welder training package

Weld Australia is calling on the Federal Government to undertake an in-depth review of the TAFE welding curriculum.

The industry body says the recently released Manufacturing and Engineering training package (MEM 2.0) is not only inadequate for the needs of industry, but imposes significant restrictions and burdens on apprentices, employers, and TAFEs.

Mackay's Resource Industry Network is seeking businesses to participate in its 2020 Regional Accelerator program and Export Ready Course, both starting in August.

The Federal Government has launched a $2 billion initiative to retrain and upskill people into sectors with job opportunities.

The JobTrainer package will also subsidise the wages of tens of thousands of apprentices in jobs across Australia.

It includes a $1 billion JobTrainer Fund to provide up to an additional 340,700 training places across Australia to help school leavers and job seekers access pre-apprenticeships, short courses and full qualifications to develop new skills in growth sectors and create a pathway to more qualifications.

Regional trade training hubs set for upgrade

More than $1.17 million in construction projects are planned for regional TAFE campuses in a Queensland COVID-19 recovery plan.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the upgrades to campuses in Bohle, Burdekin, Bowen and Cannonvale highlighted the important role skills and training would play.

Resources Centre of Excellence ready to roll

The $7 million Mackay Resources Centre of Excellence is on track for its planned official opening next month.

Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick today inspected the finishing touches at the centre, jointly funded by the State Government and Mackay Regional Council.

Gladstone Engineering Alliance has launched a new Business Continuity Training Workshop for local businesses.

JCU professional development courses

James Cook University’s Economic Geology Research Center is conducting short courses for mineral exploration professionals and geology postgraduate students aimed at professional development in exploration and applied geochemistry.

Applications have opened for the 2021 BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) apprenticeship program.

BMA has not revealed how many new apprentices it will be taking on next year, but the numbers are expected to be around the same as this year's bumper intake of 56.
