Hyzon Motors has signed a deal to deliver five hydrogen trucks to Ark Energy for use by sister company Townsville Logistics in road train configurations.

Ark Energy Corporation is an Australian subsidiary of Korea Zinc and proposes to develop the SunHQ green hydrogen hub at that company's Sun Metals zinc refinery site at Townsville.

Sun Metals and TECH team up in iron oxide study

Townsville zinc refinery operator Sun Metals and the proponents of the planned TECH battery chemical plant will investigate the potential to sell a joint iron oxide product.

Pure Minerals' TECH (Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub) project is expected to produce 327,000 tonnes per annum of high-grade iron oxide (haematite) as a co-product of processing nickel laterite ore for battery materials.

Pure Minerals said the expansion currently under way at the Sun Metals refinery would also see it producing an iron oxide product.

Sun Metals has attracted a $5 million State grant to help build North Queensland’s first renewable hydrogen facility.State Development Minister Kate Jones said Sun Metals would build the new facility at its Townsville zinc processing plant after securing support from the $15 million Hydrogen Industry Development Fund (HIDF).“Hydrogen has huge potential to pump millions of dollars into our economy and create jobs for workers in Townsville,” Ms Jones said.

Sun Metals cushions local business from COVID-19 blow

Sun Metals is doing its bit to ease the economic pressures of COVID-19, bringing forward payments to suppliers as well as supporting a voucher system to help local hospitality businesses.

It comes as work on a $450 million expansion at the company's Townsville zinc refinery heads towards its expected peak in the fourth quarter of this year, when the construction project is expected to support about 350 jobs.

Powerlink study tackles system strength constraints

A Powerlink Queensland study looking to tackle a key challenge for renewable energy projects connecting to the grid has attracted $490,629 in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).

The $922,000 Powerlink Cost-Effective System Strength Study kicked off in August 2019 and is expected to be complete this year.

It is focused on at addressing system strength challenges by exploring the merits of several technical solutions, as well as business and regulatory models to facilitate lower cost solutions and remove commercial barriers.

Refinery a ray of sunshine for local hospitality venues

Sun Metals is supporting Townsville’s hospitality sector by providing hundreds of employees with vouchers from a list of local cafes, restaurants, and pubs.

The initiative aims to support the region through the COVID-19 crisis as a part of Townsville Enterprise’s recently launched Buy Now, Holiday Later campaign.

Buy Now, Holiday Later has been designed to provide operators immediate cash support by encouraging the purchase of online gift cards and also keeping Townsville North Queensland top-of-mind to encourage future travel when it is safe to do so.
