South32 Cannington is seeking expressions of interest from community groups in McKinlay or Cloncurry shires to put an old work bus to good use.

The 10-year-old Mitsubishi 25-seater was previously used to transport members of Cannington’s workforce from the mine’s accommodation village to operational areas.

Researchers are tracking a hawksbill turtle nicknamed ‘Cannington' as miner South32 supports an initiative to help the endangered species.

South32 Cannington mine has teamed up with Reef HQ Volunteers Association, James Cook University researchers and the Queensland Government for the project.

A satellite tracking device was attached to the turtle in late January by researchers on Milman Island, a small sandy cay and important nesting area in the Great Barrier reef’s far north.

Tracking 'Cannington's' movements will provide new data and information to help inform future conservation measures for the species.

South32’s Cannington operation has partnered with registered charity RedDoor Community Services to help disengaged young people in the Cloncurry region fulfil their potential.

Cannington’s AU$60,000 investment has enabled RedDoor to expand its services by employing a new Youth Development Mentor to deliver registered training programs in construction, hospitality and business for young people who are not currently engaged in formal education or employment.

South32 Cannington has renewed its sponsorship of JCU Townsville Fire for this season's Women’s National Basketball League championship.

The 2020 WNBL season gets under way on November 11, with JCU Townsville Fire tipping off against Perth Lynx in Mackay.

The season is following a revised format due to COVID-19, with all 60 games played during a six-week period entirely in North Queensland, giving local spectators a unique chance to witness the country’s best female basketball players in action.

Cannington adds AD63 truck to underground fleet

South32 Cannington is set to put the largest underground truck in the Cat product line to work.

The North West Queensland operation took delivery last month of the world's first AD63 to site, according to dealer Hastings Deering.

With a 63-tonne payload, the AD63 boasts a Euro Stage V engine and tilt cab for easier maintenance.

South32 Cannington vice-president operations Joe Russell said work was underway to tailor the vehicle to the specific requirements at Cannington.
