Tributes flow for worker killed at Crinum mine

Tributes have flowed on social media for the man killed in a rock fall at the Crinum underground coal mine near Emerald this week.

Graham Dawson, 60, was undertaking roof support work at the Sojitz Blue-owned mine, which is being brought back into production after a long period on care and maintenance.

"Another good man lost to the mining industry, condolences to the Dawson family," wrote one of the many people taking to social media to express their sorrow.

Flags remained at half mast at the Queensland Mines Rescue Service rescue stations at Blackwater and Dysart yesterday as efforts. . .

Death probe continues after mine roof collapse

Investigations are continuing into the Crinum coal mine roof fall which killed a Mastermyne employee on Tuesday night as further details of the incident emerge.

Mining and Energy Union Queensland District president Stephen Smyth said he understood the man and his co-workers were undertaking strata support work in the mothballed mine's conveyor roadway when the collapse occurred.

New owner Sojitz Blue has been working to bring the underground mine back online by the end of the year.

It awarded a $600 million contract for Mastermyne Group to carry out re-establishment work as well as providing mining services. . .

Deadly rock fall at Crinum coal mine

A miner has been killed after a fall of rock from the roof at the Crinum underground coal mine near Emerald overnight.

Mackay-based contractor Mastermyne Group has been carrying out work to restart the mothballed site as a bord and pillar mining operation for owner Sojitz Blue.

“This is a tragic event and our immediate thoughts are with the family, friends and workmates of our employee,” Mastermyne Group managing director Tony Caruso said.

Mr Caruso said the company was providing the employee's family with support and assistance, while counselling services have also been made available to all Mastermyne. . .

Fairhill mine proposal enters final straight

Futura Resources is raising the last tranche of funding to allow for the Fairhill-Wilton project’s construction over coming months after ticking off its final environmental approval.

The proposed open-cut coal operation would be mined by Sojitz Blue and piggyback on that company's nearby Gregory-Crinum complex infrastructure.

It received Federal Environmental approval late last month, subject to conditions under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act including a groundwater management plan.

Milestone for Crinum underground mining plans

Coal miner Sojitz Blue has re-entered the old Crinum underground workings this week in a milestone for the proposed restart of mining there early next year.

Sojitz Blue managing director and chief executive officer Cameron Vorias said the seal had been broken and initial inspections encountered no unexpected issues.

“Mastermyne, who are doing the work with us, are evaluating the conditions underground and we are looking at putting forward the final feasibility study for the re-opening next year,” Mr Vorias said.

Sojitz Blue says it is on track with plans to reopen production at the Crinum underground mine in Central Queensland around April next year.

Sojitz Blue (then Sojitz Coal Mining) gained control of the mothballed Gregory Crinum coking coal site last year after acquiring it from BMA for $100 million.

Sojitz to roll out two more mines, 300 jobs

Sojitz Coal Mining and Futura Resources have signed an agreement to proceed with the new Wilton coking coal mine.

Production is expected to begin as early as July at the open-cut mine, with an operating life of 50 years.

It comes as Sojitz hits its stride at the recently restarted Gregory open-cut operation and the company is also looking to develop an underground mine at the Central Queensland site by the end of the year.

The Wilton project and underground development together will create about 300 additional mining jobs in the Emerald region.

Full steam ahead for Sojitz Gregory coal exports

Sojitz Coal Mining is on track to produce about 900,000 tonnes of export coal from Gregory mine, near Emerald, by the end of March.

The company acquired the mothballed Gregory Crinum coking coal mine from BMA for $100 million and has brought it back online as Sojitz Gregory.

Sojitz Gregory coal mine gears up for restart

Activity is ramping up at the Sojitz
Gregory site near Emerald in Central Queensland, where overburden removal is
due to begin within a fortnight.

The site’s Marion 8050 dragline is
undergoing refurbishment, while a CAT-6060 excavator and a Komatsu PC3000 are also
being assembled on site and will be available to commence operations by mid-June.

Sojitz gears up to restart Gregory mine

Sojitz
Coal Mining has officially taken control of the Gregory Crinum site in
Central Queensland today and plans to start mining from May.

The
operation is expected to employ about 300 people at its peak – with the
workforce centred on the Emerald, Springsure and Capella area.

The
company announced the deal to acquire the mothballed coking coal mine from BHP
Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance for $100 million in May last year.

It
has taken this long to work through all conditions in the contract, according
to Sojitz Coal Mining managing director and chief executive officer Cameron
Vorias.

Contractor Kalari commenced hauling coal his week from the new Meteor Downs South mine for railing at the Minerva operation, south of Emerald.

BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) is selling its mothballed Gregory Crinum coking coal mine to Sojitz Corporation for $100 million.

Sojitz said today it planned to recommence operations at Gregory Crinum as soon as the acquisition process was complete.

The Gregory Crinum operation, 60km north-east of Emerald, comprises the Crinum underground mine, Gregory open cut mine, undeveloped coal resources and on-site infrastructure including a coal handling and preparation plant, maintenance workshops and administration facilities.

Gregory Crinum Mine’s capacity was six million tonnes of hard coking coal per annum when production ceased and it was placed into care. . .

The new Meteor Downs South mine, 45km south-east of Springsure, has produced its first coal.

Minerva mine operator Sojitz Coal Mining developed the thermal coal mine in joint venture with U&D Mining.

The milestone comes about six months after the start of on-site clearing and construction work.

The truck and shovel operation is expected to produce about 500,000 tonnes per annum for the first two years, when Meteor Downs South will rely on road haulage to get its coal to the Minerva rail load-out facility for transport to Gladstone port.

The bulk of the heavy equipment has been assembled and is ready to roll at the new Meteor Downs South coal mine, 45km south-east of Springsure.

Minerva mine operator Sojitz Coal Mining is developing the thermal coal mine in joint venture with U&D Mining.

Sojitz Coal Mining managing director and chief executive officer Cameron Vorias said 95 per cent of the new operation's equipment was on site and had been assembled at the mine infrastructure area.
