New safety measures to fight lung dust disease

New standards apply from this week to reduce coal and silica dust exposure for workers in Queensland's quarries and mines.

The allowable limit for respirable coal dust is cut to 1.5 milligrams per cubic metre from 2.5 and from 1 to 0.05 milligrams per cubic metre for silica dust.

The measure follows a nationwide review by Safework Australia and aims to protect workers from the deadly health threats of black lung disease and silicosis.

CFMEU Mining and Energy Queensland President Stephen Smyth welcomed the measures, saying the union had campaigned extremely hard for lung. . .
