Diatreme Resources has boosted the high-grade silica sand resource estimate for its Northern Silica Project to 235 million tonnes, substantially exceeding the estimated 75.5Mt resource for its nearby Galalar project.

Diatreme’s intention is to progress to scoping studies to determine the potential economics of a sand operation at the Si2 deposit, with the potential to fast-track development given its proximity to the Ports North-owned Cape Flattery port.

Diatreme Resources says a new offtake agreement from its Galalar silica project highlights Asian demand for its premium‐quality silica product as solar energy goes from strength to strength.

The MOU with Jiangxi Kangjia New Material Technology Co covers supply of 250,000 tpa of photovoltaic-grade product from the Cape York project at mine start‐up.

It follows MOU’s signed with Fengsha Group and Wan Zhong Investment Group.

Final metallurgical testwork for Galalar silica project

Diatreme Resources has engaged industry specialist Mineral Technologies (MT) to undertake final metallurgical testwork for the definitive feasibility study for its Galalar silica sand project.

The testing program will use a one-tonne bulk sample taken from an area representing the first five years of planned mining at Galalar.

Two variability samples from other areas within the first 15 years’ mining will also be processed to finalise the process flowsheet.

Metallica triples high-purity silica sand resource

Metallica Minerals has tripled the high-purity silica sand resource at its Cape Flattery project to 38.3 million tonnes.

Industrial mineral specialists Ausrocks produced the new estimate after drilling at the Far North Queensland project in December.

Diatreme Resources is eyeing sites in Townsville for a potential downstream processing plant for silica sand from its Galalar project.

The company is targeting first production in 2022 from the Cape York silica project, located near Mitsubishi's major Cape Flattery sand mine.

Diatreme highlights Galalar growth potential

Diatreme Resources says results from exploration drilling undertaken latelast month have highlighted the Galalar silica project's potential for further expansion.

The drilling program comprised 44 air‐core drill holes for 835m, with some 2000kg of bulk samples collected from the preliminary mine plan footprint.

It also featured exploration drilling outside the current resource, with newholes encountering deeper sections of silica sand than anticipated, indicating the potential for an increased resource in this area, the company reported.

Scoping study paints bright picture for silica project

A scoping study for the Galalar silica project has shown its potential as a significant near‐term, low‐cost and premium‐quality silica producer for fast growing Asian markets, Diatreme Resources says.

The new Cape York mine, 200km north of Cairns, would cost $24.4 million to bring online and has a projected life of 15 years.

Diatreme says it would be developed in partnership with the traditional owners Hopevale Congress, with a 12.5 per cent project interest.
