Employment mix underpins jobs lift – MCA

Harnessing a mix of employment models had helped the mining industry to triple its workforce in the past 20 years, the Minerals Council of Australia has told a Senate inquiry into job security.

MCA deputy chief executive officer Sid Marris said Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showed 84 per cent of the workforce were permanent employees either with a mining company or specialised service contractor.

"The industry pays the highest average wages. Employees in companies present today are all paid above award rates, double the median for all industry," he said

Labour hire woes aired in public hearing

Labour hire workers are treated like second-class citizens at Central Queensland coal operations, a Senate inquiry on job security has heard.

Rockhampton-based pump crew operator Chad Stokes was among the individuals giving evidence yesterday on behalf of the CFMEU.

"I've been in labour hire ... for seven years. There just aren't any permanent jobs being offered anymore," he said.

"I work the same roster and shifts as the permanent workers on my crew. I have no job security. I get paid less and it's really hard to take time off."

Albanese highlights labour hire concerns

Australian Labor party leader Anthony Albanese has highlighted the pitfalls of workforce casualisation during a Bowen Basin visit that included a stop at Isaac Plains coal mine and the Moranbah Miners' Memorial.

Casualisation and increased use of labour hire had been undermining safety in the mining industry, Mr Albanese said.

"Because non-permanent workers are far less likely to be in a position of speaking out about safety issues. We need to move to more secure work. And that's why Labor will ensure that security of employment is an objective of the Fair Work Act," he said in a. . .

Job security hearings take mining focus

Mackay's Resource Industry Network and mining union the CFMEU are among those due to front a public hearing today by the Senate Select Committee on Job Security.

The committee is tasked with inquiring into and reporting on the impact of insecure or precarious employment on the economy, wages, social cohesion and workplace rights and conditions.

Casualisation of the workforce has been a hot-button issue in the Central Queensland coalfields, with the CFMEU campaigning to end what it describes as 'the permanent casual rort'.

CFMEU general president Tony Maher said there was some dispute over the rate of casualisation. . .
