General Manager appointed to Resources Centre of Excellence

The Resources Centre of Excellence (RCOE) has announced Mackay business leader Steven Boxall as General Manager. 

Mr Boxall will return to Mackay to start the new position in early October after a successful period as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Barcaldine Regional Council. 

RCOE is a skills and innovation incubator tasked with sustaining the growth and evolution of the diverse resource sectors of the Mackay Isaac Whitsunday (MIW) region. 

It will be the link between businesses and educators, research providers and other stakeholders, to establish the region as a globally connected enterprise hotspot.

Mining skills and knowledge hub open for business

The new $7 million Mackay Resources Centre of Excellence has officially opened its doors to students and industry.State Development Minister Kate Jones said the one-of-a-kind facility in Queensland featured an Underground Simulator Mining Facility, control room, workshop, laboratory, and classrooms.“This is about creating jobs and ensuring locals have the training they need to fill them,” Ms Jones said.“The government has a clear strategy to rebuild Queensland’s economy and save jobs. BMA commits $2.3m to CQ research and innovation

BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) continues to support and invest in regional Queensland with the announcement of $2.3 million in funding towards research, training, and innovation. 

The investment will support the appointment of a general manager of the newly established Resources Centre of Excellence (RCOE) in Mackay and a chair of automation and future work skills at CQUniversity (CQU).

Resources Centre of Excellence ready to roll

The $7 million Mackay Resources Centre of Excellence is on track for its planned official opening next month.

Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick today inspected the finishing touches at the centre, jointly funded by the State Government and Mackay Regional Council.

He said the facility would ensure the Mackay region remained one of the world’s best sources for mining expertise and innovation in the mining equipment, technology and services (METS) sector.

Research centre to focus on mineral processing solutions

A new $35 million Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence based at the University of Newcastle aims to make mineral processing more environmentally sustainable.

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Enabling Eco-Efficient Beneficiation of Minerals will work towards achieving zero-emission mining by doubling energy and water productivity, and reducing the loss of high value metals during processing by up to 90 per cent.

University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky said the research would have lasting environmental benefits.

Building contract awarded for mining support hub

Mackay construction company Fergus Builders has been awarded the contract to build the $7 million Resources Centre of Excellence.

The $3.28 million contract includes construction of an administration building, workshop, laboratory, landscaping and utilities.

The next stage of development will include fit-out of an underground mining simulator.

Assistant Minister for State Development and Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert said the awarding of the tender to Fergus Builders was a major step forward in the delivery of the centre.

Coal giant gets behind new Resources Centre of Excellence

BMA is backing the new Resources Centre of Excellence in Mackay, with an offer of $475,000 funds plus expertise.

Construction of the centre is due to begin next month and it is expected to be open for business in March next year.

BMA asset president James Palmer described it as a critical hub to bring together research, education and the resources industry in Mackay.

Commitment on Mackay Resources Centre of Excellence

The Queensland Resources Council has welcomed progress in setting up the Mackay Resources Centre of Excellence, with construction set to start early next year.

QRC chief executive Ian Macfarlane said the State Government’s commitment of $3.6 million for the centre was a commitment in confidence in the sector, its development and adoption of cutting-edge technology as well as acknowledging the industry’s contribution to jobs, exports and the broader economy.
