Balance sought for environmental bonds

The dicey question of mine site rehabilitation will be put to the new LNP Government as one of the outstanding mining issues which needs to be resolved.

It comes from the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC), whose Queensland director Sarah Gooley has had initial meetings with new Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dale Last and his head of department.

Ms Gooley is one of the 600 delegates at the Noosa Mining Investor Conference, which winds up today.

Queensland has appointed its first Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner as part of a raft of reforms to drive the regeneration of land on old mine sites.

A State Government Director-General with extensive experience in environmental rehabilitation, James Purtill, will take up the role next month.

Richmond vanadium plans advance to DFS

A joint venture is taking a major undeveloped vanadium resource in North-West Queensland to the next level, launching a definitive feasibility study to mine the Lilyvale deposit.

Work to date shows the mining and processing operation could be brought online at a cost of $242.2 million and that it would carry an NPV (net present value) of $613 million.

Initial job estimates are about 200, with recruitment to focus on the Richmond region, however - due to the small local population - a 100-person accommodation would also be built to support a FIFO and DIDO workforce.

Coal partners sought for mine waste study

Sustainable Minerals Institute researchers are seeking partners in the Queensland coal industry to help trial a new technique for predicting the rate at which mine waste releases salt into the environment.  

Following a two-stage project supported by ACARP, SMI’s Environmental Geochemistry Group is confident this work can offer new insights into closure planning.

Spoils are waste rocks produced by open-cut coal mining operations which consists of rock formations and soil cover overlying or interbedded with coal seams.

They typically feature a high density of salt which is environmentally damaging if released in high concentrations.

State funds to spur rare earth phytomining work

A study into plants with a propensity to gather rare earths through 'phytomining' has attracted $1 million in backing from the State Government.

The University of Queensland’s Sustainable Minerals Institute is looking at whether certain types of native plants found at rare earth element-rich sites in Queensland can draw those metals out of the soil in high volumes.

A former open-cut mine in Central Queensland has been transformed into natural and productive land thanks to a rehabilitation program being hailed as a great example.

Resources Minister Scott Stewart said areas of Glencore’s Oaky Creek coal mine had achieved certification for its progressive land rehabilitation.

Webinar spotlight on Century rehabilitation win

New Century Resources' achievement in gaining an industry-first Estimated Rehabilitation Cost reduction for the Century mine is the subject of an AMEC Queensland webinar tomorrow (February 25).

The Queensland Government last month agreed to a $14.1 million reduction in the ERC associated with the Century mining operations in the lower Gulf, taking the amount to $183.9 million.

At the time, company managing director Patrick Walta described the reduction agreement as a fantastic achievement and a demonstration of New Century's strategy to provide for material progressive mine rehabilitation while delivering beneficial economic outcomes.

Start-up looks to satellites to support mine rehab scene

A start-up founded by two Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) research students is tapping rapidly improving satellite imaging technology to monitor the progress of mine site rehabilitation.

Envirometrics.io is one of 12 UQ start-ups recently awarded $10,000 equity-free funding through the university’s 2021 Venture ilab Accelerator Program.

Founded by Roger Tang and Imam Purwadi from SMI’s Centre for Mined Land Rehabilitation, Envirometrics.io is behind the new product known as Mine-R.

Council leading the way with landfill rehabilitation project

An ambitious process used to cap a 50 year old landfill is due for completion this month in Townsville.

Townsville City Council is the first council in Australia to use a bituminous geomembrane to cap a landfill site for its rehabilitation.

The $4 million project is constructing the final cap on the remaining portion of the Hervey Range landfill.

The bituminous geomembrane is less prone to leaks and is more resilient than other products.

Legislation has passed to establish Queensland’s first mining industry rehabilitation commissioner.

The measure was part of the Environmental Protection and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2020 (EPOLA Bill), which the State Government says will further improve Queensland’s mine rehabilitation framework and improve financial assurance outcomes for the State’s resources sector.
