Key rail line back in business after extended cuts

The Townsville to Mount Isa rail line reopened yesterday after severe flooding saw parts of the key route closed since December 29.

Queensland Rail said crews had been working around the clock to repair 13km of track and more than 50 individual track defects, ranging from culvert damage to ballast replacement, across a vast and isolated area.

“Despite ongoing wet weather conditions, our teams have pushed through to ensure this vital freight and passenger link is back in operation," Queensland Rail head of regional Scott Cornish said. . .

Investment to stack odds in favour of Isa rail uptick

Queensland Rail will look at enabling double-stacked trains to run between North West Queensland and Townsville as part of a $50 million investment package announced for the Mount Isa Line.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey announced in parliament today that three more projects had been approved to bolster freight movement between North Queensland’s largest port and the minerals province.

A business case is to be finalised this year on the potential to run double-stacked trains from Mount Isa to Stuart and potentially to the Port of Townsville.
