A second round of pilot plant testing has 'ticked all the right boxes' as QEM fine tunes vanadium and oil extraction plans, according to managing director Gavin Loyden.

QEM is advancing its Julia Creek vanadium and oil shale project, 6km east from the township of Julia Creek in North-West Queensland.

Following on from a promising first round of bench-scale pilot plant testing at the Melbourne headquarters of HRL Technology Group last month, the second round has delivered improved vanadium and oil extraction rates with a larger sample size.

QEM raises $2m to advance Julia Creek project

QEM has raised $2 million to accelerate the development of its Julia Creek vanadium-oil project.

Managing director Gavin Loyden said the funds would allow QEM to complete ts oil and vanadium pilot plant, and for the subsequent six months of operations to validate strong extraction test results recorded to date.

"This comes at a time of strong vanadium pricing (USD$9.80/lb 98% V2O5 Flake) and the increasingly apparent need for grid support batteries if we are to complete our transition to renewable and carbon-free power generation," he said. . .

QEM is pushing ahead with a green hydrogen proposal for its Julia Creek vanadium and oil shale project, engaging specialists to look into potential wind and solar power generation at the site.

DNV Australia has been engaged to undertake a pre-feasibility study into power generation from solar and wind farms, as part of the broader assessment into hydrogen production at the flagship project in North West Queensland.

QEM is looking into green hydrogen opportunities at its flagship Julia Creek vanadium and oil shale project in North-West Queensland.

The company said it would investigate the financial and regulatory requirements to produce hydrogen using a “green” solar-powered electrolyser.

It expected that the hydrogen would initially be used as a support to the energy needs of other resources projects located in the North West Minerals Province, but ultimately for the hydrogeneration of its own raw oil into transport fuels, QEM said.

QEM says it is seeing impressive vanadium extraction results from test work at its flagship Julia Creek project.

The project hosts oil shale resources as well as vanadium, so the company has been working to fine tune efficient extraction of both commodities to maximise the value of operations there.

QEM said today the latest extraction test work indicated very high extraction vs vanadium retention rates could be achieved at certain temperatures on shale that had been ashed to extract the oil values.

Oil yields add momentum to Julia Creek project

QEM has announced successful results from independent test work aimed at increasing oil yields from its Julia Creek vanadium and oil shale project.

It says the work shows substantially higher oil yields are possible at Julia Creek through the addition of a solvent during extraction processing, compared to options such as direct retorting.

QEM is changing tack on its Julia Creek vanadium and oil shale project as it looks to undertake prefeasibility work in the next six months.

QEM managing director Gavin Loyden said the past quarter had primarily been one of consolidation and bringing fresh approaches to the company.

It has identified a suitable extraction technology for the project and appointed HRL Technology Group to carry out test work to investigate the selected process for QEM’s oil shale resource and also to evaluate vanadium and other metal extraction from the shale, post oil extraction.

Julia Creek vanadium deposit ‘one of the largest in the world’

QEM says its Julia Creek project is proving to be one of the largest vanadium deposits in the world as it reveals a significant resource upgrade.

The company’s flagship Julia Creek vanadium / oil shale project covers 249.6sq km in the Julia Creek area of North West Queensland.

Following the resource upgrade, the project holds a 2760Mt vanadium JORC resource, with an average V2O5 content of 0.30 per cent.

This is a 62 per cent increase in the size of the vanadium resource.

Vanadium explorer QEM Limited expects to release an updated resource in the coming months for its flagship Julia Creek vanadium / oil shale project.

The company recently invested more than $400,000 in seismic and drilling work at the site over a two-month period.

At the same time, it added a further tenement to its Julia Creek project, taking the total project area to about 496sq km.

Drilling to flesh out vanadium potential

Vanadium junior QEM has moved to qualify its geological model with a core drill program at its site near Julia Creek in North-West Queensland.

The four-inch five hole drilling was designed as an infill program to provide data between existing holes.

The core recovered will be used to advance processing studies intended to optimise the extraction of vanadium and potentially, hydrocarbons.

It was intended that the program provide about 300kg of bulk ore material for planned processing studies, QEM executive director David Fitch said.

Seismic survey work kicks off at Julia Creek project

QEM has started a seismic surveying program on its flagship Julia Creek project in North-West Queensland.

The company has engaged Velseis to conduct the survey, which aims to increase the geological confidence of the deposit.

QEM say the seismic data gathered through the survey will play an important role in the assessment of potential mine designs and also in the process of planning the pre-feasibility study for the Julia Creek project.
