Byerwen death ‘déjà vu’ for traumatised workers

The Mining and Energy Union says the death of a second worker within three weeks at QCoal's Byerwen mine has been earth-shattering for colleagues.

Queensland District President Mitch Hughes said the traumatised workers felt a horrible sense of déjà vu when they received the news of yesterday's fatality, which happened when a Caterpillar 793 mining truck ran over a light vehicle at the open-cut coal mine. 

Emergency services were called to the worksite about 1.10pm, locating a critically injured worker who was declared dead at the scene.

Mastermyne engaged for Cook Colliery restart

QCoal Group subsidiary Constellation Mining has engaged Mastermyne Group to resurrect operations at the mothballed Cook Colliery, near Blackwater.

Former Cook Colliery operator Bounty Mining went into voluntary administration late in 2019 after a string of setbacks, including rockfalls in the mine.

The project will be restarted over two distinct phases, with the first phase commencing immediately.

Mastermyne said the Stage 1 works would see the company re-commence the underground operations, bringing the operation out of care and maintenance and transitioning. . .

MMG launches share placement

Dugald River mine operator MMG has announced a $US300 million ($AU387.5 million) new share placement to strengthen the company’s balance sheet and to step into its next phase of growth.

Sedgman to build Byerwen tailings dewatering facility

Minerals processing company Sedgman says it will start construction work this month on a tailings dewatering facility at the Byerwen mine.

The project would result in a lower operational risk profile, less power usage, and improved water recovery and management of dewatering chemicals at the site, the contractor said.

Sedgman has strong ties to the QCoal Byerwen site,  located 20km west of Glenden in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.

It delivered engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning services for a train loadout facility and processing plant at Byerwen in 2017, and the engineering, procurement. . .

Sedgman wins Qld $166m contract extensions

CIMIC Group’s minerals processing company, Sedgman, has been awarded two contract extensions by QCoal to continue to operate and maintain its Sonoma and Byerwen mines processing plants in Queensland.

The three-year extensions will generate revenue of $166 million for Sedgman.

The agreements replace and extend Sedgman’s existing agreements at the mines, continuing CIMIC Group’s long-standing relationship with QCoal.

They had a strong history of delivering consistent outcomes for QCoal, through our companies Sedgman and Thiess, said CIMIC Group Chief Executive Officer Juan Santamaria.

QCoal applauded for Indigenous job rates

The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) has applauded QCoal’s Indigenous participation rates at the company’s Byerwen coal mine in Central Queensland.

QRC chief executive Ian Macfarlane said QCoal’s Indigenous representation at its Bowen Basin mine was 12 per cent which was three times the industry average.

“Indigenous people comprise 4 per cent of the State’s workforce in resources and Queensland’s Indigenous population is 4 per cent. We are one of only two sectors with a true representation of Indigenous people in our workforce," Mr Macfarlane said.

QCoal celebrates healthy partnership

QCoal and the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland section) this month celebrate 10 years of partnership in support of rural and regionalQueenslanders.

Initially a partnership between the QCoal Group and the RFDS, and later expanding to include both the QCoal Group and the QCoal Foundation, the union has been responsible for the formation of the RFDS Dental Service, which has delivered more than 15,600 patient visits since its inception.

This service has provided dental care across the length and breadth of the state in locations including Collinsville, Winton, Sapphire, Monto, Dajarra, Camooweal, Cherbourg, Springsure, Jundah, Theodore, Clermont and Richmond. . .
