Ok Tedi restart after COVID-19 crisis

Ok Tedi Mining in Papua New Guinea is due to resume mine operations today (April 1) after a suspension due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.

Acting managing director and chief executive officer Kedi Ilimbit said the restart of operations would be gradual, with ramp up to full production expected to take up to two weeks.

The Ok Tedi outbreak was a major concern for Queensland, with Cairns acting as a FIFO hub for Australian workers at the site.

COVID-19 crisis sees Ok Tedi mine suspend operations

Papua New Guinea-based Ok Tedi Mining has halted operations in order to protect its workforce, communities and operation as COVID-19 grips the country.

The company said that in light of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases at the mine site and in Papua New Guinea, it would suspend operations for 14 days as of Friday, March 19, to stop further transmission of the virus within its operations.

Loss in revenue during the suspension is expected to be in the order of PGK210 million, the equivalent of about $AU77 million.

Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) has suspended with immediate effect all its international flights to Cairns following reports that five of its passengers who travelled out this week tested COVID-19 positive while doing their hotel quarantine in Cairns.

The company says it takes the situation very seriously and has been in close liaison with the Queensland Police and Queensland Health.

Large-scale testing reveals more Ok Tedi COVID-19 cases

Ok Tedi Mining has reported 37 new positive COVID-19 cases after a round of testing following its decision to suspend operations last week.

The company announced on August 5 that it had suspended operations for at least 14 days after seven workers tested positive for COVID-19.

The Ok Tedi open-pit mine is located in PNG’s Western Province and counts a number of Australians among its workforce, with FIFO arrangements via Cairns.

It said this week that it had since implemented a contact tracing, testing and isolation program at the mine site.

Papua New Guinea’s Ok Tedi copper and gold mine has suspended operations for at least 14 days after seven workers tested positive for COVID-19.

The Ok Tedi open-pit mine is located in PNG's Western Province and counts a number of Australians among its workforce, with FIFO arrangements via Cairns.

Ok Tedi Mining managing director and chief executive officer Musje Werror said a decision to return to normal operations would be governed by the company’s duty of care to its workforce.

Operations would resume when Ok Tedi Mining was confident its workforce would not be infected. . .
