Upgrade in train for critical freight route

Work has kicked off on a $6 million upgrade on the Mount Isa Rail line, bolstering flood resilience on the critical freight route between the North West Minerals Province and Port of Townsville.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said also that $20 million had been accessed from the State Government’s $80 million, four-year incentive scheme, encouraging freight operators and the resource industry to use the rail line.

The $6 million upgrade will take place along roughly 320km of the line, starting just west of Hughenden and continuing right through to near Cloncurry.

Activity around the north west Queensland town of Richmond is a symbol of investment into the Great Northern Railway line this financial year according to peak industry body, Mount Isa Townsville Economic Zone, or MITEZ

Mount Isa rail line back in business after repairs

The first train left Townsville last night to travel the Mount Isa Line after a fortnight-long closure due to flood damage.

Queensland Rail chief executive officer Nick Easy said crews certified the track fit for service at midday yesterday (February 10).

"Approximately 60 Queensland Rail employees were involved in recovering flood-damaged sections of the line as quickly as possible, including at Prairie and Little Emu Creek," he said.

"At Prairie Creek, crews completed repairs on the western approach to the bridge, in addition to track and ballast replacement, and repairs to a bridge and associated earthworks at Little. . .

Key rail line remains closed due to floodwaters

The rail line between Mount Isa and Townsville remains closed as water hampers Queensland Rail's attempts to assess damage from flooding.

Queensland Rail regional head Jim Benstead said flooding had occurred in the area from Torrens Creek to Prairie, resulting in washouts and structure damage to bridges.

"Queensland Rail is continuing to monitor the situation on the Mount Isa Line, with further rainfall possible over predicted for the coming days," Mr Benstead said.

"Our crews have been progressively inspecting the line where safe to do so and we’re aware of repairs required at Prairie Creek and Emu Creek. . .

Floodwaters cut Mount Isa rail line

The rail line is closed between Townsville and the North West Minerals Province due to floodwaters between Charters Towers and Hughenden, including at Prairie.

Queensland Rail regional head Jim Benstead said detailed track inspections in some areas could not take place until water had receded.

"We will work to re-open the line as quickly as possible once if it safe to do so," he said.
