Longwall mining operations have restarted at Moranbah North mine, with production expected to ramp up over coming weeks.

Mine owner Anglo American said also that mining development activities at the Grosvenor mine had safely resumed this week, as part of a staged approach to restarting longwall mining operations later this year.

Operations at Moranbah North Mine were suspended on February 20 following the identification of a coal heating issue, while Grosvenor went offline after a blast injured five men in May last year.

Coal miners ‘rattled’ after another gas event

The withdrawal of workers from Moranbah North is the latest in a series of events that has left Queensland underground coal miners rattled, a key union says.

Operations have been suspended at Moranbah North after mine management identified carbon monoxide and ethylene gas levels in the gas monitoring system, pointing to indicated a potential spontaneous heating in the longwall panel.

Experts are continuing assessments to pinpoint the cause of an event which prompted Anglo American to evacuate workers from its Moranbah North underground coal mine at the weekend.

The company said elevated levels of some gases in the goaf had triggered the withdrawal of workers from the longwall operation as a safety precaution.

"At the time of the incident, we had been mining through some particularly challenging geology and every precaution was being taken," an Anglo American spokeswoman said.

Anglo boss denies safety trade-off for production

Anglo American globally had set targets to double cashflow by 2023, and for its Moranbah North and Grosvenor mines to lift production to a combined total of 24Mtpa, a safety inquiry has heard.

Metallurgical coal business chief executive officer Tyler Mitchelson was questioned during Queensland Coal Mining Board of Inquiry hearings today over 'the Anglo American Burning Ambition' company document early this year that highlighted those goals.

And he maintained there was no trade-off between safety and production at the company's mines.

Training opportunities with Anglo American

Anglo American’s Metallurgical Coal business is continuing to invest in the next generation of miners across its Central Queensland mines, with multiple entry-level opportunities available.

“We’re committed to supporting skills development across the Central Queensland regions where we operate, and are currently looking for six new apprentices to start work in 2021 at our Dawson mine, near Moura,” a spokeswoman said.

Dawson Mine is an open-cut metallurgical coal mine, and the apprentices will undertake structured training in working areas of the mine with a rotation of duties to maximise exposure to various facets of the operation. . .
