Mining sector fights threat to fuel tax credits

Mining groups have hit back at a push to abolish the federal diesel fuel tax credit scheme, saying it would harm industry competitiveness.

The Australian Greens have stepped up calls for the change after reports the Labor Environment Action Network was campaigning for Treasurer Jim Chalmers to strip miners of the tax credits.

Mining earnings stand firm as economy slows

The latest data from the Australian Bureau Statistics confirms the importance of the mining industry to the Australian economy, says the Minerals Council of Australia.Despite the overall economy contracting, mining industry GDP increased 4.9 per cent in 2019-20 and totalled $202 billion, MCA chief executive officer Tania Constable said.
