Resignation ‘childish’ or ‘a position of principle’?

Rockhampton MP Barry O’Rourke has slammed the resignation of former Mayor Margaret Strelow as a “childish tantrum” or expensive “stunt”.

Ms Strelow's resignation this week will lead to a by-election after the State Government decided to change local government laws that would have seen previous runner-up Chris Hooper become mayor of Rockhampton.

It came after a misconduct finding by the Councillor Conduct Tribunal over a day trip to an Adani solar farm in India in 2017, joined by other Queensland regional mayors.

Runner-up rule to change after resignation outcry

A law change is afoot to turn around the situation that sees Rockhampton mayoral runner-up Chris Hooper in line for the title following yesterday's shock resignation of Margaret Strelow.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said today the Palaszczuk Government would introduce and pass a bill to retrospectively amend the Local Government Act once the new parliament was sworn in.

"I have received advice that should this be completed at the earliest opportunity, any vacancies to any mayoral or councillor positions that have recently arisen will need to be filled through a by-election," he said.

Rockhampton Mayor in shock resignation

Rockhampton Mayor Margaret Strelow announced her resignation late yesterday via social media.

The shock announcement came after a Councillor Conduct Tribunal found her guilty of misconduct over a day trip to an Adani solar farm, she said.

"I absolutely refute their finding. I acted at all times in accordance with my own conscience and on the advice of senior legal practitioners as well as on the advice of officers from the Department of Local Government," Cr Strelow said.

Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry said she was absolutely gutted over hearing the news.
