Major Hay Point building refurb a win for local jobs

North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) has announced local company Fergus Builders as the principal contractor for its Hay Point Administration Building refurbishment project, which is set to start before the end of the year.

Home to Maritime Safety Queensland’s (MSQ’s) Vessel Traffic Services and NQBP’s marine pilots, the project will include the refurbishment and upgrade of internal fixtures and amenities.

The project would extend the life of the building and cater for continued operation and usage, said NQBP chief executive officer Nicolas Fertin.

Solid trade results for Port of Mackay

The Port of Mackay has recorded its second-best results for financial year trade throughput after topping three million tonnes despite the global economic impact of COVID-19.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey made the announcement, with the port recording 3.17 million throughput tonnes in 2019-20, supporting jobs and industry in the region.

"COVID-19 has impacted global economies and Queensland hasn't been immune,” Mr Bailey said.

“What we’ve seen at our ports, however, is that thanks to a strong health response we’ve been able to continue facilitating trade.
