Trade and tradition meet innovation at summit

Tariffs and traditional resource development dominated the introductory speech made by the head of Queensland’s peak mining body to the Queensland Exploration Council (QEC) Innovation Summit.

The QEC yesterday hosted the annual event at the Westin Hotel in Brisbane.

GRX kicks on as exhibitors bump in

It was a frenzy of activity at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Southbank yesterday as exhibitors prepared for the Global Resources Innovation Expo (GRX).

Prepped and willing to supply a nuclear industry

One Central Queensland company is setting itself up as a provider to a nuclear Industry.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton has outlined plans for seven commonwealth-owned and built nuclear reactors on current coal fired sites, should the LNP win the next federal election

They include Tarong about 130km from Brisbane and Callide around 90km from Gladstone.

Rockhampton-based SWM Group has a long standing role as a services and machinery supplier to mining, defence and other industries.

The company has recently been involved in the rehabilitation of ERA’s Ranger Uranium Mine in Northern Territory.

Moon management tech moves to mines

Australian-based tech company Lunar Outpost Oceania is looking to partner with mining companies to reduce human exposure to hotspots by removing staff entirely from high-risk tasks and environments.

Safety, decarbonisation and productivity benefits are part of a package that comes with the development of an interoperable autonomous robotic workforce undertaking multiple tasks on mining operations.

New tech squeezes better results from concrete mix

Researchers from RMIT say they have developed a new method for casting prefabricated concrete products incorporating recycled waste that results in material up to 35 per cent stronger than traditional concrete.

Professor Yufei Wu from the School of Engineering led the development of the Rubberised Concrete Processing Technology (RCP-Tech) and said it offered an efficient and inexpensive solution.

“This technology can be used to significantly improve the strength, hardness and durability of any type of concrete material, such as rubber concrete, recycled aggregate concrete, and even ordinary concrete,” he said.

Ideas Lab in business to foster FNQ innovation

James Cook University’s Ideas Lab is up and running in its new $30 million building in Cairns.

Cairns campus director Dr David Craig said the Ideas Lab brought together JCU staff and students in Internet of Things Engineering and data science, alongside local innovators – individuals and groups for whom ideas meant business.

“This is the home of innovation for Far North Queensland, bringing together JCU researchers and community entrepreneurs in an environment that’s designed to bring our region’s best ideas to life,” Dr Craig said.

Off-grid water treatment plant wins design honours

Ampcontrol and Aurecon's innovative off-grid water treatment solution Gilghi has been awarded a Good Design Awards accolade in the Social Impact category.

The Gilghi water treatment plant is designed for use in remote communities, using a standalone hybrid power supply consisting of solar photovoltaic panels, a back-up diesel generator and battery storage.

$900,000 grant supports Rocky manufacturer to expand and create jobs

A Rockhampton herbicide manufacturer been awarded $914,541 from Round 3 of the Palaszczuk Government’s Made in Queensland (MiQ) grants program to increase local production processes.

MiQ provided matched funding to Queensland manufacturers looking to increase internationally competitiveness, adopt innovative processes and technologies and create high-skilled jobs of the future said Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke.

“Local company Cirrus Ag is investing almost $2.5 million to introduce automated manufacturing production techniques to Australia that will enhance the quality of its products and reduce Queensland’s reliance on interstate resources,” Mr O’Rourke said.
