More in the tank for growth thanks to $4.8m water job

Construction is well underway on a $4.8 million reservoir to provide greater water security for Hughenden.

North Queensland business Wulguru Steel won the contract to construct the 4.3ML welded steel tank and began work in April.

Flinders Shire director of engineering Hari Boppudi said about 40 per cent of the work had been completed to date.

The project comes after Flinders Shire Council engaged GHD to complete water network analysis in 2017.

Mr Boppudi said the analysis identified that Hughenden’s peak water demand was 4.55ML/d for the current population, increasing to 5.65 ML/d. . .

Hughenden dam proposal moves to next phase

The Federal Government has approved funding for a detailed business case to develop a potential $500 million Hughenden water project.

The Hughenden Irrigation Project Corporation (HIPCo) received approval for the next phase to go ahead after submitting a preliminary business case in March which showed the scheme was viable.

HIPCo chair Shane McCarthy said the plans for the Hughenden Irrigation Scheme had been revised as the study progressed, including a shift in the planned site for the dam.

Economic development projects boost Hughenden

Flinders Shire Council is positioning itself for growth with a $1.35 million project to increase industrial blocks at Hughenden and a $2.5 million-plus facelift for the town’s main commercial strip.

Director of engineering Hari Boppudi said the council was creating up to 23 new industrial blocks of varying size.

The
development is effectively an expansion of the existing industrial estate near
the Hughenden council depot, which was developed in 2011/12.

It is being
funded with $1 million in Building Our Regions money and a $350,000 council
contribution.

MITEZ is lobbying for 'a bigger push from the Commonwealth' for a range of advanced North West Queensland projects to become a reality.

MITEZ (Mount Isa to Townsville Economic Zone) chief executive officer Glen Graham was among those addressing hearings in Townsville and Mount Isa this week of the Senate Select Committee inquiry into the effectiveness of the government’s Northern Australia agenda.

Dam aspirations set in stone at Hughenden

Representatives from three levels of government have unveiled a foundation stone representing the future site of the Hughenden Irrigation Scheme.

The Hughenden Irrigation Project Corporation (HIPCo) is continuing to advance the project after a funding pledge of $180 million from Prime Minister Scott Morrison late last year.

A dam would be built about 15km north of Hughenden in the upper catchment of the Flinders River and is expected to allow for the irrigation of more than 10,000ha of farmland.

Flinders Shire seals deal for meat processing plant

Flinders Shire Council has signed an agreement to advance development of the proposed $100 million-plus Hughenden beef processing facility with Chinese partner CNVM Investment.

Construction is set to commence in late 2020, with operations to commence 2022, the council said.

It is planned to process between 800 and 1500 head daily, creating more than 200 local jobs.

The strategic partnership between CNVM Investment and Flinders Shire Council has advanced the project to the detailed project design and approvals stage.

Flooded Flinders River a dam fine site

The mighty
flow in the Flinders River this week has highlighted the potential power of a
planned 400,000 megalitre dam and hydroelectricity project for Hughenden.

Seeing the river in flood this week, HIPCo chair Shane
McCarthy couldn’t help remark that it was a shame the project hadn’t been able
to start two years ago.

Special status for Flinders irrigation project

The proposed 15 Mile Irrigated Agricultural Development Project on the banks of the Flinders River near Hughenden has gained special status to advance.

Flinders Shire Council’s plan for a 918ha irrigated agricultural development has been declared a coordinated project, to create jobs and drive sustainable economic activity in the region.

State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Minister Cameron Dick said, if approved, the development would create an initial 60ha of irrigated land for table grapes and 60ha of citrus crops for market.
