Mining region readies for new jobs trajectory

The mining sector is expected to remain the dominant employer within the Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday region through to 2024 - but it is tipped to lag other sectors for jobs growth.

A skills roadmap for the region has highlighted construction and health care/social assistance as the greatest jobs growth industries, by additional positions created.

Each of those sectors is tipped to create well over 1000 new positions based on Jobs Queensland employment projection data for 2019-2024, compared to 90 in mining.

Mental health support for business owners

Greater Whitsunday Alliance (GW3) is encouraging small business owners who may be struggling after a tough year to take advantage of the extended MIW Business Wellbeing Service.

The MIW Business Wellbeing Service provides free mental health support to Mackay Isaac Whitsunday small business owners.

“As we move towards the end of the year it is a season that is difficult and stressful for many and this year those feelings and struggles may have increased due to COVID-19 crisis,” GW3 chief executive officer Kylie Porter said.

Backed by the BHP Vital Resources Fund, the wellbeing service allows small business owners. . .

Report shows healthy project pipeline for Mackay region

Nearly $40 billion worth of projects have been listed on the newly released Greater Whitsunday Alliance (GW3) Regional Projects Development Register.

The updated register lists 489 projects and highlights the project pipeline in the Mackay Isaac Whitsunday region.

Mackay has $1 billion in infrastructure projects planned and $2.7 billion in construction projects; Isaac has more than $15 billion in mining projects, as well as nearly $2 billion in utilities projects proposed; while Whitsunday has more than $6.7 billion in infrastructure projects planned and more than $8 billion in utilities.

Digital coaching at hand for Mackay region businesses

Economic development body Greater Whitsunday Alliance (GW3) is launching My Digital Coach - a program to assist small business recover from the impacts of COVID-19 on the economy.

The free program, funded through the Local Buying Foundation, will help participants develop or enhance foundational digital skills and assets to improve their business’ bottom line.

GW3 chief executive officer Kylie Porter said the program was significant for the region’s small businesses to help them continue to trade and survive the current economic climate.
