Geos help shape the future at mine waste symposium first

The geoscience community is set to step into some of the big issues facing the transition to a low-carbon economy when it meets next month (February 6-7) at the Australian Mine Waste Symposium.

The symposium, held at the University of Queensland’s Global Change Institute, will address four themes including valorisation to sequestration, mining and reprocessing pathways, barriers to success and the future landscape.

Hydrogen in the spotlight with interactive map

Data on a raft of Queensland hydrogen projects is easily accessible online thanks to an updated interactive map and the HyResource website.

Geoscience Australia has worked with CSIRO, Future Fuels CRC, National Energy Resources Australia and the Australian Hydrogen Council for the project.

It has recently released an update to its interactive Australian Hydrogen Projects data layer available from the AusH2 Data Portal. Click HERE

Geoscience Australia opens graduate applications

Geoscience Australia is calling for graduates with degrees in geology, geophysics, geodesy and spatial analysis.

Its 2021 Graduate Program offers experience in fields such as energy and mineral exploration, groundwater, marine, environmental and geospatial sciences.

Two online information sessions about the graduate program are scheduled in the next fortnight for people who would like to know more. The sessions will be held on:

North West in key corridor earmarked for attention

The Mount Isa region is officially 'in the zone' as the Australian Government targets two key mineral-rich corridors to help support the nation's economic recovery.

The corridors stretching the length of the nation will be the focus of a $125 million expansion of Australia's Exploring for the Future program.

They have been identified by scientific experts at Geoscience Australia as having high potential for new energy, minerals and groundwater resource discoveries.

Broad horizons in resources exploration program

The Exploring for the Future program has mapped about 39 percent of the continent, or 3,000,000sq km, to reveal the resource potential of Australia’s north, new figures show.

Resources Minister Keith Pitt said the $225 million program had completed more than 20 collaborative activities with state and territory governments in Queensland, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and South Australia over the last four years.

Cash boost for exploration program

The Federal Government will invest an additional $125 million in a world-leading exploration-stimulation program it says has the potential to deliver just over $2.5 billion in economic benefits and jobs to northern Australia.

The Government’s investment adds to the $100 million previously spent on Geoscience Australia’s Exploring for the Future (EFTF) program to drive investment, generate jobs and secure the future of the resources sector.

The additional $125 million will extend the program for four years from June 30.
