Air Freight Handling Services (AFHS) is calling for tenders for construction of a new distribution hub at Cairns International Airport.

The State Government is supporting the development of the new Regional Trade Distribution Centre (RTDC) with an investment of up to $10 million.

Watpac to lead $155m Cairns Defence works

Defence has engaged Watpac Construction as managing contractor for a $155 million upgrade at HMAS Cairns.

Designs will be finalised around July 2022 for the NCIS-8A HMAS Cairns Building and Maritime Works package.

On-site construction is set to commence in September 2022 and be completed by December 2024.

The $155 million investment will support the new Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessels.

Jobs boost through $46m hospital build

Construction work on a $46 million redevelopment of the Thursday Island Hospital and healthcare centre is expected to create about 50 jobs as it gets under way next week.

Principal contractor Hutchinson Builders has been on Thursday Island since mid-March and has completed preliminary work to pave the way for construction.

‘Coral ark’ vision unveiled for Port Douglas

Nonprofit group Great Barrier Reef Legacy has revealed its vision for a 'coral ark' to be built in Port Douglas.

The Living Coral Biobank would preserve the genetic biodiversity of hard coral species by collecting and maintaining living samples of some 800 species worldwide.

State puts $15m on the table for Cairns research precinct

The State Government will invest $15 million to acquire land for a new research and education precinct near Cairns Hospital to be built in partnership with James Cook University.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the announcement was in addition to a $52.9 million investment in upgrades for Cairns Hospital committed at the recent Cairns Community Cabinet.

Cairns Convention Centre expansion milestone

Redevelopment of Cairns Convention Centre has reached a milestone, with a ground-breaking ceremony (pictured below) to mark the expansion phase of the $176 million project.

Cairns MP Michael Healy said the start of expansion works complemented refurbishment already underway at the site.

Lendlease has announced a raft of key retail tenancies at Cairns Central as it continues a $60 million redevelopment project at the CBD shopping complex.

Lendlease said it had made significant headway over the past year, with two stages of the Myer fit-out already complete and works underway on the Spence St Express Parking Ramp.  ​

State pledges $53m for Cairns University Hospital

The Queensland Government has committed almost $53 million towards stage one of a plan to build a university hospital in Cairns.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said James Cook University and Queensland Health would work together on planning for the project, which is expected to support about 160 construction jobs.

“Together with James Cook University (JCU) we will deliver a university hospital for Cairns, just like we did in Townsville,” she said.

Tender gets the ball rolling for $140m upgrade

A managing contractor tender has gone out for a $140 million upgrade project at the HMAS Cairns Naval base.

The planned works include demolition of the existing Navy wharf and construction of a new wharf.

The project will also see construction of new operational support facilities including an office accommodation building and hardstand storage facilities, upgrades and refurbishment of logistics and maintenance facilities; and upgrades to services and in-ground infrastructure.

The upgrades are in readiness to support the new Arafura class offshore patrol vessel.

The Department of Defence expects to award the chief contract in February 2021.

Cairns COVID works funding to support 70 jobs

Fogarty Park in Cairns will soon have all-weather options for markets and other events after the council secured funding for a new turf surface and upgraded drainage
