The AEEAs recognise projects that contribute to social and/or economic outcomes and represent excellence in engineering.

AI system earns engineer his spot among top innovators

Harnessing artificial intelligence to alert machinery operators when workers enter their blind spot has seen Presien founder Nathan Kirchner named among Australia’s Most Innovative Engineers.

As Laing O’Rourke chief technical officer, Dr Kirchner (pictured above) led his team in developing Toolbox Spotter.

The AI system sees objects, understands what they are and decides what actions to take in response to them seamlessly and in real-time.

It is described as an AI computer vision system based on a deep convolutional neural network (D-CNN) that is optimised for heavy industries.

Arup senior structural engineer Scott Rathie's role in creating the pandanus-inspired design of Townsville's new stadium has seen him named among Australia's Most Innovative Engineers 2020.

Chief Engineer to lead policy discussion

Engineers Australia has announced the appointment of Jane MacMaster to the newly-created role of Chief Engineer.

The aim is to have a figure to lead Engineers Australia’s engagement and policy discussion with industry, government, academia and other key stakeholders.

“The Chief Engineer will play an important part in delivering the organisation’s strategic vision and we are thrilled to have secured someone of Jane’s calibre,” Engineers Australia chief executive officer Bronwyn Evans said.
