Glencore delivers Christmas cheer to farming families

Glencore's coal business is providing thousands of New South Wales and Queensland farming families affected by drought with IGA gift vouchers for Christmas.

The company said it would be providing a $300 IGA gift voucher for groceries to 5800 farming families affected by the drought - one for each of its coal employees.

The donation will total $1.7 million and will be delivered in partnership with RuralAid, one of Australia's largest rural assistance organisations.

Councils welcome cash injection for drought areas

The Local Government Association of Queensland has welcomed Federal Government moves to provide drought funding for non-farm businesses and extra funding for councils in affected regions.

More than 66 percent of the land area of Queensland is drought declared, directly or indirectly affecting more than one million people.

LGAQ chief executive Greg Hallam said while it was farm businesses that felt the immediate impact of drought, entire communities suffered the flow-on effects of a downturn in the agribusiness sector.
