Industrial action is likely to escalate as 'a very unhappy' Townsville copper refinery workforce is backed into a corner by Glencore, according to a union leader.

ETU (Electrical Trades Union) state organiser Liam Sharkey was commenting after a walkout at the site this morning by members of that union along with the AWU (Australian Workers' Union) and CFMEU (Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union).

Government lifeline secures copper future

Glencore will continue to run its copper smelter in Mount Isa and refinery in Townsville beyond 2022 after reaching an agreement with the State Government.

The company announced today that it would receive a one-off incentive from the State Government and also planned to invest more than $500 million for the continued operation of the plants.

An announcement is expected within six weeks regarding the future of Glencore's Mount Isa copper smelter and Townsville copper refinery.

Glencore is playing its cards close to its chest on the future of the copper smelter in Mount Isa.

A four-year extension was due for review this year. In the past, the owner has made a decision to continue smelting copper contingent on operating under legacy environmental standards.
