The Charters Towers airport is set to receive $800,000 worth of upgrades over the next 18 months.

Charters Towers Regional Council has indicated it will be looking to obtain quotes or a tender for the works in the next few months.

The upgrades are to increase the airstrip width and create more aircraft parking spaces, and would also set the site up as a potential fly-in, fly-out hub for the mining industry.

Mendi poised to start Charters Towers housing development

North Queensland's Mendi Group has lodged an application to start stage one of a new housing development project in Charters Towers.

The proposed development, Grand Secret Estate, is located near the Charters Towers Showground and will initially see 17 new lots ranging from 5,000sq m to 1.05ha in size released.

Further stages featuring smaller block sizes are anticipated.

Council gear up for grabs in August auction

Earthmoving equipment including a grader and loader as well as numerous light vehicles and trucks go under the hammer this month in a Charters Towers Regional Council auction.

Geaney's Real Estate and Ray White Nasco are conducting an online and onsite auction from 9am on Friday, August 28.

Progress for Big Rocks Weir proposal

The case for the construction of the proposed Big Rocks Weir has advanced, with the Charters Towers Regional Council nominating as the proponent if the project proceeds.  

The project comes under a $54 million business case being managed Townsville Enterprise that includes the start of investigations into the broader Hells Gates Dam project.

Major Charters Towers water works near finish line

A $21.55 million water infrastructure project including construction of a new water treatment plant in Charters Towers is more than 95 per cent complete.

Water has been a top priority for the local council and Charters Towers Mayor Liz Schmidt said it was fantastic news that the new Wheelers Rd plant and associated upgrades were almost ready.

The upgrades would increase water production capacity to 22 ML per day, up from 18 ML per day, she said.

Council snaps up land for industrial growth

Charters Towers Regional Council has purchased three parcels of land west of Sellheim to open opportunities for further economic development.

The 777ha of land on Stockroute Rd borders the banks of the Burdekin River.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said the land purchase was an opportunity for the community to prosper.
