FNQ upgrades on the way with $2.4m renewal funding

Four projects across Leichhardt will receive a share of more than $290 million in Australian Government funding under Round 5 of the Bridges Renewal Program and Round 7 of the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program.

Specifications for concrete in bridges

Austroads has published four new technical specifications dealing with components and treatments used to extend the life of concrete in bridges.

Austroads program manager, assets, Ross Guppy said the specifications reflected contemporary construction practice and, wherever possible, were consistent with the relevant Australian and New Zealand standards.

ATS 5420 sets out the requirements for the supply of bolts, nuts, screws, washers, studbolts and threaded rods for steelwork. This specification also includes requirements for the supply of stainless steel fasteners.

Supply of Small Box Culverts (ATS 2230) provides information on supplying small, precast, reinforced, concrete rectangular box culverts, up to 1200mm. . .

Piles of progress on Haughton floodplain project

A new higher bridge is taking shape over the Haughton River as work progresses on a $514.3 million package of safety and flood immunity upgrades on the Bruce Highway between Ayr and Townsville.

Work on the Haughton River Floodplain Upgrade project began in April last year and is expected to run until mid-2021, supporting more than 540 jobs.

The latest timelapse video from the Department of Transport and Main Roads shows the driving of tubular steel piles as part of works to build a new wider and higher bridge over the flood-prone Haughton River.

Rash of road projects brings Mackay jobs boost

Drone footage has been released showing progress on the Mackay Ring Road - part of a project pipeline hailed as bringing unmatched transformation for the city's road network.

The jobs pipeline for Mackay road projects will stretch further with Infrastructure Australia adding the Walkerston Bypass to its ‘priority projects’ list last week.

Councils want bridges fixed

The Federal Government has been urged to continue funding for a program aimed at repairing timber bridges throughout Queensland, and the rest of Australia.

Local councils have joined the Australian Local Government Association to call for permanency of the Federal Bridges Renewal Program, to help fix the roughly one in five timber bridges throughout the country in poor condition.

The findings came out of the 2018 National State of the Assets: Roads and Community Infrastructure Report launched today at the National Local Roads and Transport Congress in Alice Springs.

Bridges take shape in ‘top-down’ build

Construction of the New England Highway arch bridges at Mount Kynoch is nearing completion in the $1.6 billion Toowoomba Second Range Crossing (TSRC) project.

Nexus Infrastructure TSRC project director Jose Antonio Sanchez said the dual-lane bridges would not only be visually spectacular, but a major engineering accomplishment.

Vines Creek Bridges replacement kicks off

Queensland Bridge and Civil has been awarded the contract for the $28 million Vines Creek Bridges project in Mackay, with construction works starting six months ahead of schedule.

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the work would replace the two double-lane bridges on Harbour Rd (Mackay-Slade Point Rd).

“The project will deliver two new bridges and approaches, flood improvements with the coinciding completion of Mackay Regional Council’s levee wall, and a dedicated shared path for cyclists and pedestrians,” Mr Bailey said.
