Board of Inquiry to resume hearings next month

The Queensland Coal Mining Board of Inquiry is gearing up for a second round of public hearings at the Brisbane Magistrates Court next month.

The hearings from March 9 will focus on the Grosvenor mine near Moranbah, where a blast last year seriously injured five men.

The evidence will relate to that serious accident on May 6 2020 and the 27 methane exceedances at longwalls 103 and 104 that occurred between July 1, 2019 and May 5, 2020.

Evidence relating to the continuous inertisation of goafs will also be considered during these hearings.

Grosvenor gas levels in the spotlight

The State Opposition is questioning the role of the Queensland Mines Inspectorate in preventing incidents in mines and quarries, after more revelations on the history of high-methane incidents at Grosvenor.

The Australian reported today that the Anglo American coal mine had recorded dangerously high methane levels at least 98 times in the four years before the May 6 longwall explosion that seriously injured five workers.

Records showed the mines inspectorate was informed of the recurring high-potential incidents and visited the central Queensland metallurgical mine repeatedly, but never directed Anglo to suspend operations.

Grosvenor blast inquiry board shake-up

Former Chief Inspector of Mines for Queensland Andrew Clough is joining the board of inquiry investigating methane gas incidents in Bowen Basin coal mines.

It comes after Professor Andrew Hopkins from the Australian National University recused himself from the board following a request on behalf of mining company Anglo American.

Professor Hopkins made the decision to address any potential perceived bias arising from statements he made prior to his appointment, board chairperson Terry Martin said.
