A stepped-up deal to supply bauxite to Xiangsen Aluminium has given Metro Mining renewed confidence in expansion plans for its Bauxite Hills mine, 95km north of Weipa.

The company said today it had signed an expanded and extended strategic co-operation agreement with the Chinese firm for the supply of about five million wet metric tonnes (WMT) of bauxite from 2022 to 2024.

It said the expanded agreement followed positive trial outcomes at four refineries in the Shanxi, Guangxi and Guizhou provinces in China.

Bumper month for Cape bauxite producer

Metro Mining has reported a record shipping month in June, with a total of 536,454 wet metric tonnes loaded on ocean-going vessels for export from its Cape York bauxite operation.

Combined with the strong performances in April and May, it means Bauxite Hills output has exceeded upper forecasts for the quarter by 14 per cent (or 150,688WMT).

“We have exceeded expectations throughout the entire June quarter, demonstrating that this level of production is sustainable," Metro Mining managing director and chief executive officer Simon Finnis said.

Bauxite expansion delayed as COVID-19 bites

Metro Mining expects to put back its planned $51.4 million Bauxite Hills expansion due to uncertainty sparked by the COVID-19 crisis.

Completion of Stage 2 and the associated expanded production was not expected to occur prior the second half of 2021, Metro said.

The Stage 2 expansion, taking the Cape York operation to 6 million WMT (Wet Metric Tonnes) per annum, has attracted a NAIF offer of a loan facility of up to $47.5 million.

Smooth sailing for 2020 restart at Bauxite Hills

The Bauxite Hills operation is loading its first ship of the year, the Vialli, at the port of Skardon River on Cape York after the mine's wet season break.

The shipment, which commenced loading on April 14, is the first this year to foundation customer Xinfa - who will purchase about two million dry metric tonnes in 2020.

Owner Metro Mining says the year is off to an excellent start, with 142,000 wet metric tonnes of bauxite mined and, of that, 106,000 WMT screened to date.

Bauxite Hills operations set for early April restart

Metro Mining plans to restart production at Bauxite Hills on Cape York early next month after its wet season break.

The company said in an update to the market today that one area of particular focus as it resumed mining was the health of its Indigenous employees and the threat the COVID-19 outbreak posed to their communities.

"Our travel and work procedures take these issues into account, and we are constantly monitoring any changes to travel and other restrictions in these communities so we can adapt accordingly," the company statement said.

Metro Mining has secured a $47.5 million NAIF loan for infrastructure to step up production at its Bauxite Hills mine, about 95km north of Weipa.

It comes after the company last month announced completion of the definitive feasibility study for the Stage 2 expansion of the operation to 6 million wet metric tonnes per annum.

Bauxite Hills continues to deliver for Metro Mining

Metro Mining has reported a bumper quarter for its Bauxite Hills mine on Cape York, shipping 1.415 million wet metric tonnes of bauxite.

The shipments exceeded the forecast budget by 13 per cent in the September quarter, keeping the company on track to meet its 2019 production and shipping guidance of 3.3-3.5 million WMT.

Engineering modifications on the overland conveyor system at the Barge Loading Facility were completed, resulting in record barge loading rates being achieved last month, Metro said.

Strong demand for Cape York bauxite

Metro Mining is enjoying a strong sales pipeline from its Bauxite Hills mine, as it signs a new contract with a Chinese refinery operator.

The new agreement with a major State-owned Chinese aluminum group covers tonnage of 420,000 WMT (wet metric tonnes), all for delivery in 2019.

It means the Metro has sold about 90 per cent of its planned 2019 production of 3.3-3.5 million WMT from the Cape York bauxite mine.
