Isaac students in future skills pilot program

In a Queensland first, students from the Isaac region are being offered specialised training in new, digital, and autonomous technologies through the Resource Centre of Excellence in Mackay.

The training is part of a pilot program designed by the Queensland Future Skills Partnership to prepare people for the emerging skills demands and employment opportunities of the fourth industrial revolution, or Industry 4.0.

It is led by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and supported by CQUniversity Australia and TAFE Queensland.

Big load of bulldozer for NZ gold mine

West coast miner Whyte Gold has this month taken delivery of the largest and most sophisticated bulldozer in New Zealand, to service its new claim in the glacier region behind Greymouth.

A five-truck convoy carrying the 115-tonne machine broken down into transportable capsules made the 500km journey from Lyttleton outside Christchurch to its new base at Rimu. Re-assembly will take two weeks.

The machine marks the start of a new phase in the development of the veteran gold mining company on a long-established site until recently believed to have been worked out.

New loaders in George Fisher automation drive

Six Sandvik LH517i's are being introduced at George Fisher Mine in Mount Isa as part of an automation project.

The Glencore-owned mine welcomed the first three new underground loaders in June, according to the company's Resourceful news bulletin.

The company says the transformative automation project is designed to improve safety, and increase efficiency and productivity.

Principal project engineer − automation, Nick Fryer, said all six Sandvik LH517i's would come online over the next eight months, replacing existing units as they reached their end of life.
