Latest data shows annual exploration growth

Mineral exploration expenditure lifted significantly in Queensland last financial year, the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies says.

But AMEC has raised concerns about the impact of tight border restrictions on more recent activity in the state.

The total exploration spend in Queensland (other than petroleum) hit $403.4 million in 2019/20 compared to $313.4 million the previous year, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures.

The figures also showed total Queensland exploration expenditure in the June 2020 quarter (other than petroleum) was $105.2 million, up on the March quarter ($81.2 million).

State backing for shared demonstration facilities would overcome a significant hurdle for junior mining companies trying to bring critical minerals projects online, a key vanadium proponent says.

Multicom Resources chief executive officer Shaun McCarthy was commenting on a pre-election push by the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) for government support for such demonstration facilities and multi-user processing hubs in Queensland.

Explorers welcome boost for wide-ranging projects

The wider scope and boosted budget of the latest Queensland Collaborative Exploration Initiative funding round has been welcomed by the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies.

“24 companies with 25 projects and almost $4 million in funding is a great boost for the industry and will make a significant impact to Queensland’s economic recovery from COVID,” AMEC Queensland manager Kate Dickson said.

“The increase in funding for this round, as well as opening up the eligibility criteria for the location of the projects, has huge benefits for jobs and economic growth opportunities regional communities."
