Aeon Metals has dumped its previous processing strategy for Walford Creek, sending prefeasibility work for the copper-cobalt mine on a new trajectory.

It comes after an independent review of the key metallurgical elements of the Walford Creek prefeasibility study (PFS), initiated by interim chief executive officer and managing director Fred Hess.

Dr Hess, previously a non-executive director, took the helm after long-time chief executive officer and managing director Hamish Collins resigned last month.

The Aeon board has decided to suspend completion of the current PFS process workstream and heap leaching pyrite concentrate testwork program for Walford Creek. . .

CEI grants add grunt to project viability

The importance of Collaborative Exploration Initiative (CEI) grants in bringing mines online with a supportive market is being played out in North Queensland.

Aeon Metals, with exploration leases throughout Queensland including in the Gulf of Carpentaria at Walford Creek and west of Mount Isa at Beauchamps, has received several CEI grants since they were introduced in the late 2000s.

The grants are managed by the State’s Geological Survey of Queensland.

Strong commodity prices are expected to help fuel a continued climb in exploration spending in Queensland, after a 77 per cent rise in the past three years, a peak group says.

Queensland Exploration Council chair Kim Wainwright said exploration expenditure in the state had been robust over most of the past 10 years, apart from a drop in 2015-17, but had been on a steep upwards trajectory since 2018.

Aeon builds tenements around Beauchamp find

Aeon Metals has snapped up further ground near the Beauchamp target in North-West Queensland after test results confirming the presence of a large, mineralised IOCG (Iron Ore Copper Gold) system.

The company said the Aeon geological team was excited by the broad regional alteration observed from recent drill results and that the target stratigraphy was at shallow depths.

It has since secured three further tenements over associated structures with coincident magnetic and gravity responses.

NT deal paves way for $22b energy development

The Northern Territory Government and Sun Cable have signed a milestone agreement to advance development of the $22 billion Australia-ASEAN Power Link project.

Promising signs in Beauchamp drill campaign

Aeon Metals has reported significant alteration and copper mineralisation being observed in its first diamond drill hole at the Beauchamp Iron-Oxide-Copper-Gold (IOCG) target.

The target, about 100km west of Mount Isa, is described as having clear similarities with the geophysical signatures of a number of world-class IOCG deposits including Olympic Dam, Ernest Henry and Carrapateena.

Aeon said its first drill hole at Beauchamp had been completed to a downhole depth of 991.2m. This was extended beyond the initial target depth of 800m down-hole because of significant alteration andcopper mineralisation being observed.

Sun Cable to power Walford Creek mining operation

Aeon Metals is turning to the sun to power its proposed Walford Creek copper-cobalt project in North-West Queensland.

The company has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Sun Cable to provide an energy solution for the operation.

Aeon explores new Mount Isa region targets

Aeon Metals has started drilling at the Beauchamp target, about 100km west of Mount Isa.

The company attracted a $200,000 Collaborative Exploration Initiative grant for the work and says Beauchamp has clear similarities with the geophysical signatures of a number of world-class Iron-Oxide-Copper-Gold (IOCG) deposits, including Ernest Henry.

More time to tweak Walford Creek cobalt process

Aeon Metals has stretched out the timing for its Walford Creek pre-feasibility study to allow further work focused on cobalt extraction.

The company said metallurgical and process workstreams were now welladvanced in the PFS for the North-West Queensland copper-cobalt project.

The front-end flowsheet design to produce copper, zinc and lead concentrates has proceeded well and is nearing completion.

But further work is needed on alternative back-end cobalt flowsheet routes to keep capital and operating costs down.

Explorers welcome boost for wide-ranging projects

The wider scope and boosted budget of the latest Queensland Collaborative Exploration Initiative funding round has been welcomed by the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies.

“24 companies with 25 projects and almost $4 million in funding is a great boost for the industry and will make a significant impact to Queensland’s economic recovery from COVID,” AMEC Queensland manager Kate Dickson said.

“The increase in funding for this round, as well as opening up the eligibility criteria for the location of the projects, has huge benefits for jobs and economic growth opportunities regional communities."

The State Government aims to 'supercharge' exploration for new economy minerals with $10 million in grants to be released under the second round of its COVID-19 fightback plan.

The package announced today also features a $650,000 investment in the mining equipment, technology and services sector.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said $10 million in exploration grants would speed the development of new mines to take advantage of high domestic and international demand in the growing “green economy”.

Boost for Walford Creek mineral resource estimate

Aeon Metals has released updated Mineral Resource estimates for its Walford Creek copper-cobalt Project in North West Queensland.

The total resources for the Vardy and Marley deposits now stand at 35.8 million tonnes at 1.94 per cent copper equivalent over 3.6km strike.

There is a significant increase to the Amy mineral resources from 1.8 million tonnes to a total of 5.1 million tonnes at 2.63 copper equivalent.

Study highlights strong outlook for Walford Creek

A scoping study has proven an attractive case for a $323 million mining and processing operation at the Walford Creek copper-cobalt project, 350km north-west of Mount Isa.

The study looked at conventional open-pit and underground mining of the project's Vardy and Marley deposits over a mine life of about 11 years.

But project owner Aeon Metals says there is significant potential for expansion and mine life extension when its Amy zone mineral discoveries and further 2019 drilling results are included in the picture.
