Six roads targeted in $143m safety upgrade program

Ross River Rd in Townsville and the Toowoomba-Cecil Plains Rd are among a raft of key routes earmarked for safety upgrades in a $143 million project. “We've identified roads with a high crash risk and will deliver improvements to ensure safer journeys on those stretches," Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said. “Works will be funded through the Queensland Government's Targeted Road Safety Program, with the investment estimated to support an average of 80 good jobs over the life of the program of works." Planning is now underway, with works to be progressively completed across six routes by 2027, weather and construction conditions permitting. Works will include: Gore Highway/Toowoomba-Athol Rd – $23.35 million for improvements along a 20km section between Toowoomba and Southbrook, including: intersection and midblock improvements at O'Quinn, Devine, Stephen and South streets, including new right-turn lanes new dedicated right-turn lanes at Colvin St, Ball St and the Animal Management Centre new median island at Boundary St South intersection and improved signs at Ferguson Rd intersection wide centre line treatment to reduce the likelihood of head-on crashes between Ferguson Rd and Wyreema-Athol Rd by providing greater separation between vehicles new acceleration lane at Main Street intersection. Toowoomba-Cecil Plains Road – $27.03 million for improvements along a 71km section between Newtown and Nangwee, including: speed limit reduction from 100km/h to 80km/h between Hursley Rd and Toowoomba Bypass Oakey Pittsworth Rd intersection improvements new staggered T-intersection at Jondaryan-Mount Tyson Rd new sloped culvert headwalls and roadside hazard removal road widening, signs and linemarking improvements at select locations. Cunningham Highway – $16.88 million for improvements at various locations along about 102km between Warwick and Coolmunda, including: new dedicated right-turn lanes at intersections audio tactile line marking and other lane delineation improvements pavement widening and new intersection lighting at select locations sloped culvert headwalls and roadside hazard removal new guardrail, as well as existing guardrail improved with new motorcyclist protection rail. Ross River Rd, Townsville – $19.32 million for improvements along the full 8km length, including: signalising Lindeman Ave intersection new left-in/left-out arrangements, blister islands and kerb changes at select intersections providing new U-turn facilities. Garbutt-Upper Ross Rd (Thuringowa Drive/Riverway Drive), Townsville – $43.21 million improvements along a 5.4km section, including: signalising Mill Dr, Hudson St and Hinchinbrook Dr intersections speed limit reduction to 60km/h between High Range Dr and Gouldian Ave new 3m shared path from Dalrymple Rd to High Range Dr with mid-block crossing upgrades, raised priority crossings at side roads, and bus stop upgrades and relocations installing a red light and speed camera and slip lane improvements at Ross River Rd intersection Charles St, High Range Dr, Gregory St, Paluma St and Ridley Rd intersection improvements. Brisbane-Beenleigh Rd – $13.29 million for improvements along the full 19km length, including: new entry treatments at some intersections to improve sight lines modifying accesses and U-turn provisions at some traffic signals new signalised pedestrian crossings at intersections and midblock locations new wombat crossings on slip lanes installing pedestrian fencing, safety barrier and crash cushions on barrier ends verge widening at key locations to allow for mobile speed cameras installing U-turn facilities for emergency vehicles.
