Projects to better manage mine tailings, create new battery technology and identify mineral exploration targets are among the beneficiaries of a $5 million-plus research funding round.

Nineteen Queensland-based PhD qualified researchers will share in the latest round of Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellowships.

The fellowships support Queensland-based researchers to partner with industry to conduct research that improves the agricultural industry, health outcomes, the environment and renewable energy.

Glencore Technology is partnering with $240,000 fellowship recipient Dr Ummul Khair Sultana from the The University of Queensland to focus on recovering critical metals such as cobalt from copper mine tailings.

UQ’s Dr Chenming Zhang has attracted $360,000 for work to develop an AI-driven system to monitor and manage mine water and tailings. Elexon Mining, Stanwell Corporation and Rio Tinto Aluminium are involved in that project.

Dr Renjie Zhou from UQ is working with Geological Survey of Queensland and Mount Carbine mine owner EQ Resources to develop new digital infrastructure to cost-effectively identify mineral exploration targets in North-East Queensland. This has attracted a $360,000 fellowship.

Another $360,000 fellowship has gone to UQ’s Dr Fang You for work with Rio Tinto Services. They are using biotechnology to support the growth of native plant species on rehabilitated mining lands through improving soil quality.

Dr Yueqi Kong has won a $240,000 fellowship for work with Graphene Manufacturing Group on a new rechargeable battery.

“Investments in our talented researchers allows new knowledge to be generated to address industry priorities and develop critical technologies.

“The Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellowship program supports Queensland-based researchers to collaborate with industry and ensure the findings are translated into practical application for the industry partner. Ultimately, this benefits Queensland’s economy and builds new jobs for the future.”
