Renewable Energy Partners has revealed plans to develop a 5GW wind farm south-east of Hughenden dubbed Bogunda.

The Brisbane-based company proposes a staged development, with an initial $5 billion stage of about 2GW to connect to the grid via the CopperString transmission line in 2029.

“We are really excited to announce the development of the Bogunda wind farm, the largest wind farm project in REP’s national portfolio,” chief executive officer Luke McDonald said.

“Hughenden has a phenomenal wind resource, strong local support and benefits from the recent commencement of construction of the 500kV CopperString transmission line by Powerlink.”

Bogunda means ‘big wind’ in the local Yirandhali language and the project draws its name from one of the participating properties.

REP head of origination Ben Larsson said the renewables industry had known of Hughenden’s wind resource for a long time.

“With CopperString’s original vision now an emerging reality, we are looking forward to working closely with our landowner partners to create an asset that utilises this incredible wind resource,” he said.

The region is already home to Kennedy Energy Park. Jointly owned by Eurus Energy and Windlab, the project combines 43.2MW of wind, 15MW of solar and a 2MW/4MWh battery.

And the State Government has approved Iberdrola’s 1000 MW Mount James wind farm, about 80km north of Hughenden.

REP’s business is centred on originating and developing large-scale renewable energy projects in Australia.

It has a portfolio of more than 10GW worth of projects under development across wind, solar,
large-scale battery storage and pumped hydro.

Those under construction include:

• Wambo Wind Farm, being built by Cubico and Stanwell Corporation in the Western Downs region.
• Ulinda Park BESS, being developed adjacent to the Western Downs substation with the Blackrock-owned Akaysha Energy.
• Hopeland Solar Farm, being developed on the Darling Downs by the CIMIC-owned Pacific Partnerships.

REP is also co-developing the 750MW/16 hr Capricornia PHES in the Mackay Hinterland with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and the Queensland government-owned CS Energy.
