News updates on Whitehaven Coal, Metro Mining, Metallica Minerals, contracts for BMD and Mendi, and more … Metallica Minerals has raised just over $3 million in a placement to back the development ofits silica sand project in the Cape Flattery dunes in Far North Queensland. Upon the new funds being received, the company will have more than $7 million available to progress activities including:• Completing environmental studies and applications to advance the project’s development• Finalising the Cape Flattery Silica Sand pre-feasibility study• Commencing the project’s definitive feasibility study in Q2 2022• Implementing a more formal silica sand marketing program to procure potential offtakepartners for the project Roadworks will soon commence on Horseshoe Bay Rd, Magnetic Island, with Townsville City Council awarding the tender for works to BMD Constructions. Mayor Jenny Hill said the $9 million project would see Horseshoe Bay Rd renewed between Olympus Crescent and Pacific Drive. “Works will include around 4km of pavement repairs and asphalt resurfacing, installation of around 1.6km of new guardrails, new safety signage including vehicle-activated warning signs, pavement marking, some kerb and channel installation, footpath upgrades and minor drainage works,” she said. North Queensland Bio-Energy Corporation is among seven companies ASIC prosecuted in the last half of 2021 for failing to comply with their obligations to lodge financial reports and hold annual general meetings (AGMs) in the required timeframes. The company - behind the proposal for a sugar-based renewable energy facility - entered into a 36-month good behaviour bond for failing to lodge three annual financial reports for 2017, 2018 and 2020. Townsville City Council has contracted local business Mendi Group to undertake the second stage of repairs to sections of Paluma Dam Access Rd which were damaged during the 2021 wet season. The council has received more than $540,000 in funding under the joint Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) to undertake the works. Metro Mining has completed loading of the final vessels to conclude 2021 contractual commitments of 3.1 million wet metric tonnes from its Bauxite Hills mine. The company said the resulting net financial position was sufficient for it to proceed to a planned wet seasonshut down and maintenance program. Target to restart ship-loading is the first week April 2022, weather permitting. Whitehaven Coal is continuing to progress through the approvals process for its $1 billion Winchester South project in Central Queensland. In its half-year report, the company said it had recently completed the public notification phase for the draft EIS. The project team is working with Queensland’s Office of the Coordinator General to address submissionsreceived.
