News updates on Townsville tender opportunities, Metallica Minerals, Gladstone Engineering Alliance, Boral, and more … Townsville City Council has called out to local gardening, mowing, slashing, weed control and outdoor management businesses to apply for up to $43 million in parks and open spaces work. It has released the tender to carry out a variety of maintenance at parks, gardens and along roadsides across the city. Mayor Jenny Hill said the contracts would be for up to eight years starting July 2023. The council will hold an information session on August 25 at Reid Park (More information HERE). Metallica Minerals has launched an exploration program with 25 hand auger holes planned for up to 5m each on ground to the west of its Cape Flattery silica project. Metallica said the program would add to the strategic options and planning for this area. “We are pleased to commence this hand auger program, which will not impact on the key focus for Metallica, which is the development of the Cape Flattery Silica project MLA to the east of this exploration program," Metallica Minerals executive chairman Theo Psaros said. A Motor Sports Park for Mount Isa is now in the early planning stages, with the Advisory Committee expecting to receive early concept design options from consultants later this year. Motor Sports Park Advisory Committee Chair and Mount Isa Deputy Mayor Phil Barwick said the feasibility study process was now underway, with the consultant commencing research and in-depth community consultations. Mount Isa City Council has secured $100,000 in funding from the Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy’s Building Sustainable Communities Grants for the feasibility study. Industry-wide construction lockdowns and exceptional rainfall, particularly in NSW and Queensland, curtailed volumes and significantly impacted FY2022 margins for building materials giant Boral. With supply chain constraints and labour shortages remaining a key issue across the industry, major projectscontinued to experience delays, Boral chief executive officer and managing director Zlatko Todorcevsk said. However, the company expects momentum to improve in FY2023. “Sharp increases in energy costs, and significant increases in cartage costs above historical inflation, totalled$58 million," Mr Todorcevsk said. "These cost increases, combined with the impact of the construction shutdowns and extraordinary rainfall, adversely impacted EBIT by $136 million, and more than offset the benefit of higher revenue and transformation initiatives." Continuing operations earnings before interest and tax (EBIT), excluding property, was $107 million for FY2022. Orica says it will source 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2040 as it aims for net zero by 2050. Building on its target to reduce scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by at least 40 per cent by 2030, Orica’s renewable electricity target will include an interim step of 60 per cent by 2030. “Over the coming years, Orica will pro-actively evolve its approach to energy procurement and secure renewable electricity partnerships to support this transition, prioritising offsite renewable generation projects to spur growth and jobs in the industry," Orica chief financial and sustainability officer Christopher Davis said.
